♦ BIG PAY-OUT The amount- paid out to the Lyttelton waterside workers on Thursday was the largest for many months, exceeding £6OOO. Many of the men received more than £7 for the week. Shops Busy Shopkeepers in Lyttelton report that business during the two or three days preceding Christmas was exceptionally brisk and compared very favourably with that of previous years. The warning issued by the Health Department against children being allowed to congregate in shops had the effect, to some extent, of inducing people to confine their shopping to Lyttelton, the local shopkeepers benefiting ac cordingly.
