There was some smart sprinting at Ellerslie this morning when the going on the No. 1 grass was fast in spite of the rain during the week. The Railway Handicap candidate Golden Sheila went attractively over half a mile in 48 3-ssec, and Dark Shadow made a fine effort over a round in Imin 49 4-sscc time that is seldom bettered. On the grass, Master Brierly covered a round at an even pace, running the last seven furlongs in Imm 42sec. it should not be for lack of condition if he fails to race prominently in the Auckland Cup. Mazir, after being slow over the fust furlong, completed five furlongs in Imin 3 4-ssec. the last half-mile m 49 4-sscc. It is doubtful whether he has ever looked better, and he has come through his cup preparation in pleasing style. . . . Gustos completed his work by galloping three fur longs in 45sec. He has done well since his arrival, and is expected to improve upon his running at Riccarton last month when his form was disappointing. Brunhilde (Goulsbro) cantered round to the turn and sprinted up the straight. She hit out with great freedom, and appears to bo ready for a solid performance in the Great Northern Foal Stakes. , • , Fersen (McTavish) completed strong work by running half a mile in 49 4-5 sec. The New Zealand Cup winner looks fit. and should be equal to a good performance to-morrow, especially if he happens to strike the track easy. Fersen was accompanied at the end of his work by an unnamed filly by Bronze Eagle who was

brought on the trip for educational] purposes. ! Cuddle was under restraint while i covering a round in Imin 56 2-sscc. the last half-mile in 55sec. She is in good heart, and is expected to make a bold : bid to win the Auckland Cup for the | second year in succession. i Sinking Fund did strong work over a round, running the last half-mile in 55scc. His stablemates Adalene and Gloucester completed a serviceable task with a short sprint in which they hit out freely. Mungatoon galloped seven furlongs in Imin 30 3-ssec. He was carrying about 10-0. and in the | circumstances it was a good effort Mungatoon is fit Modern Maid t McTavish) placed six furlongs behind in Imin 19 l-ssec, going evenly throughout. Golden Sheila (Keesing) went pleasingly over four furlongs in 48 3-ssec. the last three in 36 l-ssec. She did not nave a good move up, and it was a pleasing effort, likely to ensure her starting favourite for the Railway Handicap. Sweet Rose, after manning the first three in 38 2-ssec, completed six furlongs in Imin 18sec. King’s Archer did a round in 2min 3scc. the last halfmile in 56sec. He appears to have benefited by his race on the flat at Cambridge. Dark Shadow (Mclnally) did an attractive gallop over a round in Imin 49 4-sscc. the last halfmile in 50 4-ssec. The time is not often bettered, and the gallop indicated that Dark Shadow has trained on well since winning at Te Awamutu. Dark Shadow's brilliance and light weight should enable him to go a long way in the Auckland Cup. even if he docs not see the two miles right out. Armacourt went lazily over half a mile in 52 2-ssec. She looks very bright and muscular. Argentic com- I plctcd strong work with seven furlongs in Imin 44 3-ssec. Impasto (H. Gray) hit out nicely over half a mile in 50sec. He is in great heart. Chief Ranger (Morris) sprinted three furlongs in 37 2-ssec. He is a lazy worker, and has to be shaken up to run at any lime. WESTPORT T.C. These sales, established some 11 years ago. have grown to such importance that they arc now renowned throughout the whole world, and in that way not only prove a great advertisement for New Zealand bloodstock but for the country as a whole. In addition to a catalogue of 134 yearlings, a fine collection of stallions, “brood mares, two-year-olds, untried 'stock, racehorses in training, etc., will also be submitted. This sale as usual coincides with the summer meeting of the Wellington Racing Club. It will be held at Trentham on Thursday. January 21. _ Two days before the National Thoroughbred Sales there is being dispersed at Westmefe. Wanganui, the famous thoroughbred stud established some 13 or 14 years ago by Mr John Donald, who is now retiring owing to continued ill-health. His sale will be held at the stud farm, Westmere, near Wanganui, at 1.30 p.mt on Tuesday, January 19. Mr Donald is sending down his usual draft of yearlings to the National Sales. These will again be sold without reserve, as will the thoroughbred stud itself. It comprises a wonderful collection of brood mares, II of which have been imported from the leading studs in England, quite a number of fashionably bred Australian mares from the best staying families there, and an exceptionally line lot of young mares bred in the

Dominion and sired mostly by those great stud successes, Chief Ruler and Limond. Twenty-two of the mares have foals at foot by Beau Pere, Captain Bunsby, Colonel Cygnus, and Irish Lancer. These are a magnificent lot and are a standing advertisement to the quality of the Westmere mares and sires. The mares have all again been mated with Beau Pere and Phaleron Bay. Beau Pere is generally considered to be the finest stype of a thoroughbred yet imported to New Zealand. He is royally bred, as he is by Son-in-Law from the One Thousand Guineas winner, Cinna,-who was by Polymelus from Baroness la Fleche, the best of her year. He is a halfbrother to the highly successful Gay Shield, and his first foal was a winner in England this season. The supporting sire, Phaleron Bay, was imported only last year at a very high cost. There is no better-bred stallion in any part of the world, and he is a horse of magnificent bone,, wonderful conformation, and outstanding quality. He is a three-quarter brother to Miracle, winner of that great English race, the Eclipse Stakes, and there are other famous winners from his dam, and his granddam is a half-sister to the famous mare, Scapa Flow, whose progeny have established a record for the world. He is, too, almost a full relation to the leading sires of the day. Fairway and Pharos. The dispersal of this stud, which is now at its zenith, is undoubtedly a calamity to the bloodstock industry in New Zealand, for Mr Donald has not only shown outstanding enterprise in importing the best stock obtainable in England, but he has culled consistently, and as the proportion of winners that have come from his mares and sires is unusually high the sale should attract very wide attention.
