KOWAI COUNTY COUNCIL
At the last ordinary meeting of the Kowai County Council there were present: Crs. R. Peach (chairman), J. B. Bowker, H. May, J. Ashworth, D. McLean, and E. A. Payne. The chairman reported that with Cr. May and the clerk he had met members of the Highways Council, and had made an inspection of the Kowai river bridge at Balcairn, and pointed out the damage done by the recent flood. The board’s engineer considered that the present bridge should be lengthened. It was also mentioned that the present bridge over the Kowai river at Leithfield should also be lengthened. The board’s engineer (Mr F. Langbein) also stated that plans and specifications for a new concrete bridge over Stoney creek were nearing completion, and that tenders for its erection would be called for soo$; and also that the Picton-Christchurch main highway had been classified a State highway from November 1. 1936, and that arrangements were being made for taking over as early as possible full control from all county councils. A letter was received from the Department of Labour stating that all men registered on relief work should receive two weeks’ holiday on full pay from December 21, and in addition a Christmas bonus of £2 for married men and £1 for single men. The financial position showed;— Receipts since last meeting £931 10s 2d; accounts for payment, £272 7s; debit balance at bank, £37 8s Bd.
