TURF GOSSIP r 1 Jottings The hard track at Otaki on Saturday affected Hine Ra, and she has gone very sore. She has been withdrawn from all her Manawatu engagements and may possibly not race at the New Year. Taranaki and Dunedin are the only galloping clubs using win and place Cat will contest the Manawatu Cup. Hunting Cat was eased after his return from Riccarton, where he went amiss, so that he may not be at his best on Boxing Day. He is also to contest the Marton Cup. Hawke’s Bay reports state that Ben Braggie is galloping in style at Ngatarawa. He failed at Riccarton, but on his previous form he looked an excellent prospect for an important sprint event. „ . Relative has done well since her race at Woodville. and she will be an interesting competitor among the two-year-olds at the Auckland meeting. _ J. Mclnally, who rode Werobia in the New Zealand Cup, has been engaged again for the Greyspear gelding in the Auckland Cup. , _ , With the improving form of Royal Chief and Smoke Screen, Francis Drake will have a harder task in the Great Northern Foal Stakes, but he has made such great progress since Riccarton that it will take an exceptional youngster to lower his colours. Parishah is reported to have improved in appearance since his return from Australia, where he failed to win si race Haut Monde improved with every gallop prior to leaving for Auckland, and he should be hard to beat in his engagements there. Essex was running all over ms opponents at the end of seven furlongs at Otaki, and although the class was only moderate this good stayer has excellent prospects of paying his way on the Auckland trip. Hot Shot, engaged in the Nursery Handicap at Awapuni to-day, is a chestnut colt by Lackham from the Rangitiro—Mongonui mare Musket Vein, a half-sister to Divima, the dam of Charlatan and Punchestown. He is owned by his breeder, Mr W. G. Grey, formerly of Palmerston North and now of Auckland. _ , Lady Portland, who is to make her debut in the Nursery Handicap at Awapuni to-day, is owned in Masterton by Mrs P. Borthwick, who bought her at the last sales for 110 guineas. She is a black filly by Philamor from the Absurd —Bonny Portland mare Lady Bentinck, sister to Lady Cavendish and / Reremonana, and a sprinter of some class herself. Has the Ability Terry’s fine effort in finishing third to Cuddle and Hunting Queen in the Here Nekitini Memorial Stakes at Otaki on Saturday brought her under notice as a good horse to follow for a win during the holiday session. She has taken on open company in her two last starts and each time has been third. At Awapuni to-day she goes back to hack class. Terry figures in the Tararua Hack Handicap, nine furlongs, under top weight of 9-0. She has been perhaps * a little unlucky in getting up to that mark so soon, but she has been a difficult mare so placed in her races that she has been unable to avoid her rapid ascent in the scale. It is now clear that what she has required has been a distance of ground, in this respect taking after her dam, that solid mare Horomea. On paper Terry would look to have her work cut out to concede weight to horses like Pango and Le Grand, but on what she did at Otaki she may be capable of doing it. North Island Riders R. Marsh has been engaged to ride Sporting Blood in the Auckland Cup, and he will also be on Bold Blood, Sly Fox, and Jolly Dance at the meeting.

S. Anderson has been engaged for Padishah in the Manawatu Cup, and will also be on Orac, Finesko, Old Surrey, Cloudy Bay, and The Bluffer. A. Jenkins will be riding at the Manawatu meeting and will be at Wairarapa at the New Year. He will ride The Bigot, Rotoma, The Buzzer, Charade, and Lavington. W. Broughton and L. J. Ellis will join B. H. Morris and P. Atkins on the trip from Auckland to Palmerston North for the second day’s racing at Awapuni. Other engagements at Awapuni include:—S. Wilson. Hunting Queen (Cup), Alunga, Free Gold, Sigurd, Going Gay, Boomerang, and Fulojoy (or Acceptable); J. Leach, Sea Wrack; L. Faulkiner, Geitel; D. Mansfield, Rona Bay; P. Burgess, Lowenberg, Mother Superior, Calshot, Lady Siegfried, Windward, Le Grand, and Arctic King; J. McCauley, Mother-in-Law; L. Faulkiner, Tout le Monde, Invoice, In the Dark, and Geitel; D. Hall, Emissary, Allspice; C. Carroll, Vonia Park; G.-*R. Tattersall, Limbohm, Ingenuity, Land Tax; L. A. Pine. Dungarvan, Aurora’s Love; C. Thomson, Gay Boy, Huntette, Blue Mauritius; R. Flower, Round Score; D. Lamb, Hunting Lodge. There will be a switching of jockeys in the Great Northern Foal Stakes. Royal Chief, who was ridden by B. Morris at Riccarton, will have the services of L. J. Ellis. Morris is on Smoke Screen, who was ridden by P. Atkins at Feilding, and Atkins at Ellerslie will ride Brunhilde. In this respect, if any advantage is to be gained by a combination, Francis Drake will have it. as he will have his usual rider, W. Broughton. Additional Ellerslie enagements include;—J. Winder,’ Gay Egypt; R. Glading, Sergia, Trilliarch, Johnny

Walls; O. Mclnally, Racecall; W. Bartle, Floodtide, Gay Talkie, Beverley; A. Tinker, Bachelor King, Armacourt, Galilee; J. H. Mu:r, Lap Up; C. Walters, High Quality; C. G. Goulsbro, Girl Pat, Pakanui, De Friend, Essex, Jonathan, Rulette; A. E. Ellis, Namakia, Winlona. For the New Plymouth meeting the following riding engagements have been made:—K. C. James, Cheval de Voiee, Musquil, Nugget; L. Clifford, Student Prince, Refresher, Bonny Glow, Ripple, Clessamor, Ringside; J. McLaughlin. Eagle’s Eye, Bantry; J. Davoren, Cyllaros; G. Sargent, Gay Marionette. TROTTING NOTES Reminder Acceptances for the Canterbury Park meeting will close on Monday. Last Year’s Winners In last year’s Ashburton Cup the places were filled hv Roi I’Or 60yds, Evicus 12yds. and Wrecker scr. The time, 4min 15 4-ssc C , was a record for the course. In the New Zealand Champion Stakes Frisco Lady defeated Pot Luck and Double Great. Bracketed Horses Bracketed horses at Auckland on Monday will inch’d 0 Swordsman and Vain Lad in the S°lbv Handicap, and Great Admiral and Te Kahn in the Rowe M°morial Handicap, At Ashburton to-day the follow'ng horses will be coupled on the totalisator;— . Mitcham Handicap—Winnow and Grade Fields. . , Wakanui Hand ican—Pursuit and Reymere. Mimee and Boltaire. Ashburton Cup—Rdlo and Blue Mountain, Tempest and Cloudv Range. McLean Handicap— v anity Fair and Reclaim, Ace Pot and Trireme. Boxing Day Handican—Mordlo and Stirling Ladv, Chancellor and Iraq, Peter Lccanda, Craganour, and Mane Celeste. Glenrossie’s Driver C. S. Donald will probably drive Glenrossie in the Auckland Cup, in which race Bonny Azure will be handled by L. O. Thomas. Bittersweet Bittersweet has developed a _ cold, and was given only light exercise at Ensom on Thursday. J. Fraser, jun.. who is in charge of Mr G. J. Barton’s horses in Auckland, does not ■ regard the ailment as serious, and Bittersweet is expected to strip in good order. The Auckland Cup When rain fell at Auckland earlier in the week Red Shadow at once jumped into favour for the Auckland Cup, but the fine weather that fallowed again placed Grand Mogul in popular favour. Both Rey Snec and Bingen Palm have impressed track watchers bv the manner _ in which they have been doing their work. Prospects for Auckland The Auckland correspondent of “The Press” writes as foTows: — Baby Triumph is the most consistent of the limit horses in the Selby Handicap, but Sophy Bingen, on October form, has a good chance. Querida showed promise at Hamilton, and Dick Redmond and Golden Maid are likely improvers. Rose Marble is weil overdue for a win, and, if started, V/aingake has prospects. Bingen Sun and Vain Lad are useful: but Swordsman may beat them, and Elissa will not be far away Having drawn No. 1 position at the barrier in the December Handicap. Captain Scott will have excellent prospects. The best-known novices. Frank Best and Mollv Direct, are very badly drawn, but with a good run they may still be prominent. Transfer is very fast, but is far from reliable. Kia Kaha is racing solidly. Bronze King. Scran Iron, Eyre. True Trust, and Worthy Song have prospects, while Logan Palm and Ropata have a big field to get through. Of those engaged in the Grandstand Handicap, Cherrill is fast, and General Sarsfield goes out very ouickly, but does not stick on. Plut’is has recent winning form, and will be hard to bead off. although ToPeate may shade him at the fin’sh. Gav Sister is working att r activ°]v, and Winaway is consistent. McKinney and Star Pronto are not without prospects. In the Auckland Cup. King’s Warrior looks to hold Bonny Azure and Smooser safe, but will find Rey Soec and Bing°n Palm toueh rivals. Back to form. Glenrossie will take beating; but Grand Mogul will have a greater following. On New Zealand Cun running. Red Shadow must be dangerous. The southern successes of Bittersweet will cause her to be solidiv supported for the Howe Memorial Handicap, and Captain Bolt is sure to be prominent. Franz Derby and Corrianda are in form, and Parrish Chimes stays on well. A dry track will see Audo Patch in the picture, wh'le Arapai, Te Kahu, and Mountain Sun are solid trotters. The Akarana Handicap race presents a very difficult problem, as so many have recently won. and are evenly matched. Local successful horses are Munga Tangi. K'ng Conntrv ftwice), Levity (twice). Great Jewel, Snessiva (three), and Lucky Love has five nlaced efforts. Visitors to ” - in are Superior Rank. Electric Bell, and Baron Grand. Others with prospects include Aircraft. Imposter, Allworthy, and Kewpie’s King. WESTLAND R.C. TO-DAY’S PROGRAMME The Westland Racing Club’s threedays’ meeting will open at Hokitika to-day. The fields are very satisfactory, and include the usual strong representation from Riccarton stables. The track is likely to provide good but not fast going. The single pool system will be in use. INTERVAL BETWEEN RACES CLUB’S APPEAL DISMISSED For its spring meeting, held at Addington last month, the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting C’ub framed its Programme on a 40 minutes interval between races when the Rules of Trotting provide for only 35 minutes. Subsequently the club was asked to appear before the New Zealand Trotting Association to explain why it should not be de.alt with under the rules. After hearing the explanation, the association imposed a fine of £IOO. An appeal was made to the New Zealand Trotting Conference against the oenaltv. and the appeal was held on Thursday. The following report of the appeal proceedings have been forwarded by the secretary of the New Zealand Trotting Conference;— “The New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club, through its president, admitted a wilful breach of rule 115 in that it framed its programme to provide for races being run at greater intervals cf time than allowed by the rule. “The club gave proper notice of appeal, the grounds of appeal being ‘That the New Zealand Trotting Association has no jurisdiction under its rules to inflict any fine on the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club in respect of the offence with which the club was charged or in respect of the alleged breach of rules.’ “The judges agreed to permit counsel to appear on behalf of the parties and heard Mr A. WSBmithson in support of the appeal. Mr Smithson sub-

mitted that the fine imposed could not be properly imposed under rule 379 (0) which it was contended was the only rule which provided a penalty by way n{ fine f° r the breach committed, on the ground that rul 379 could apply only to a person or ; ’ddual and not to a club. It was further contended that rule 279 (o) did not apply as other Penalty was provided under rule 60. Mr R. A. Cuthbert, for the association, argued that rule 379 applied to a dub as well as to a physical person or individual, that rule 60 did not exhaust the punitive powers of the association, and further that in any event the judges, under rule 29. could themselves inflict a fine irrespective of all other considerstions. , ... “The judges by i» majority, with some hesitation, are of opinion that rule 379 (0) does give the association power to impose a fine upon a club, but are unanimously of opinion that under rule 29. they themselves can properly impose a if necessary do so ~ “In the result the appeal is dismissed, and the fine must stand. There will be no direction as to costs.” The appeal judges were:—Messrs D. E. Wanklyn, W. J. Sim, and J. D. Hutchison. ACTION BY MINISTER In future all trotting clubs holding totalisator permits will be compelled to frame their programmes on a 40 minutes interval between races, although the Rules of Trotting provide for a 35 minutes interval. This information was included in a letter to the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club Ircm the Internal Affairs Department, as follows: “It is observed from the_ copy of the programme accompanying your letter that 35 minute intervals are provided ’ for. In this connexion experience has shown that your c.’ub is unable to run to time with such intervals, and. in fact, no other trotting club has been able to do so during the present racing year. The Minister has taken up the whole question with the president of the New Zealand Trotting Conference, and has stated that the present unsatisfactory position cannot be allowed to continue. He has indicated that owing to shortage of time he is arranging for the issue of the totalisator license for your ciub’s January meeting with advice to observe 40 minutes intervals, but that no further licenses will be issued to trotting clubs until provision has been made ter a variation of the rule. “1 now enclose the necessary tdtalisator license which, of course, has been issued on the understanding that 40-minute intervals between races will be observed."
