OBITUARY

* —. MR J. H. SEAGER The death occurred at Christcbwrii yesterday of Mr John Henry Seas* at the age of 88 years. Born in England in 1848, Mr Seaa» became clerk in a county court afei leaving school. On May 24, 1878j3 left England by the sailing Monarch, arriving in Lyttelton IS following September. He entered ft! office of Mr T. J. Joynt, barrister aw solicitor, and later became confidents clerk to Messrs Garrick and Cowl shaw, a position which he held some years. In 1883 Mr Seager wai appointed secretary of the Christ church Building and Land Society, tel tiring in 1894. In 1900 he was elected to the board of directors of this society, retired in 1906 to spend sow time in Europe, and returned to % directorate in 1917. He was chairman from 1925 until 1931, when ill-healm necessitated his retirement. As 1& Seager had also been a director of fiw Mutual Benefit Building' Society fron* 1880 until his appointment as Secre. tary to the Christchurch Building ciety in 1888, his connexion with £3 building society movement in Christ-# church extended over more than half a century. Mr Seager was appointed a justm of the peace in 1905. Since there wa» at that time only two stipendiary nag* istrates in the district. Mr Seager vm frequently occupied the bench wherf one of the magistrates was away «£ country business. He took no othj# part in public life. Though Mr Seager was a keen bowler, well known on Christchurch? greens, his chief pleasure during hfi leisure time was collecting china. On three trips which Mr Mrs Seager made to England and Continent he was able to add eons® erably to his magniflcient During the 40 years of his retired hi Mr Seager collected many valiftM specimens, which, after the deathl Mrs Seager in September, 1932, waS presented to the Canterbury UnivaS sity College Council for the Cahtefl bury Museum.
