RIVALRY AMONG UNIONISTS
, • U.S. Shipping Strike Negotiations FURTHER ATTACKS ON MR BRIDGES (united phess association —copyright.) (Received December 25, 10.15 p.m.) | SAN FRANCISCO, December 24. j Mr Harry Bridges and eight other j Longshoremen’s Union executives j met Mr Edward McGrady (Assistant Secretary for Labour) and hope to achieve a resumption of negotiations for a settlement of the shipping strike. Verbal barrages meanwhile continued. Mr Bridges denied the charges made by Mr Thomas .Plant, chairman of the committee of ship owners, who accused Mr Bridges of! insincerity in conducting negotia- j tions. He accused the ship owners j of attempting to split the unions Mr Plant, in a statement about Mr Bridges, said: “He is a dangerous, subversive influence, undermining the foundations of American labour.” , , . , Rivalry between Mr I. Lundebeig, president of the Pacific Maritime Workers’ Federation, and MiBridges is also increasingly prominent. The bulletin of Mr Lundeberg s union attacked Mr Bridges for slandering Mr Lundeberg, who, however, issued a statement repudiating all personal attacks and declaring that unity is absolutely necessary. Mr Bridges told Mr McGrady that the Pacific coast strike could not be settled without a settlement on the Atlantic coast because cargoes from the east would cause trouble. Mr Paul Schannenburg, Conservative Labour leader, speaking at the Commonwealth Club, called Mi Bridges “a. blatherskite, who often threw a monkey-wrench into the peace machinery.”
