BRITAIN TO RETAIN FIVE CRUISERS
ACTION UNDER LONDON NAVAL TREATY (BRITISH OFFICIAL WIRELESS.) RUGBY, December 22. Formal notification has been conveyed to the United States and Japanese Embassies in London of the intention of the United Kingdom Government to have recourse to Article XXI. of the London Naval Treaty in order to retain five cruisers. It is understood that his Majesty's Government has undertaken that the vessels be retained for a maximum period of five years' peace service. They will be used, not as cruisers, but as anti-aircraft ships, which will involve the substitution of lighter guns for the existing armament of 6in guns. The Japanese reply to the proposal was in the favourable terms anticipated. This is the first time that antiaircraft ships have been officially mentioned, and indicates the importance now being attached by the fleet to measures against air attack.
