FLOOD BLOCKS ROAD
MAKAREWA RIVER AT HIGH LEVEL HEAVY RAIN IN SOUTHLAND (I'UESS ASSOCIATION TKLEGKAM.) INVERCARGILL, December 23. As a result of the heavy rains of the last two or three days the Makarewa river rose to its highest level for many years, and this morning all low-lying land about the river was flooded. The main Invercargill-Riverton road between Underwood and Wallacetown was flooded, and motor vehicles were held up for hours. A man with two draught horses towed many cars across the flooded section of road, charging 2s 6d each, and must have had a highly profitable day.
