SEVENTEEN YEARS' SERVICE
MR A. T. SMITH RESIGNS FROM HOSPITAL BOARD After 17 years' continuous service as a member of the North Canterbury Hospital Board, Mr A. T. Smith announced his resignation for reasons of health, at a meeting of the board yesterday. Mr Smith was the representative of the Halswell, Heathcote, and Paparua county councils, and for 10 years, until July of this year, was chairman of the board's public health committee. During his period as a member he has given the greater part of his time to the interests of the ents at the Cashmere sanatorium and his last action at yesterday's meeting was to propose the investigation of surgical methods of treating tuberculosis. In announcing his resignation, Mr Smith said he had enjoyed his period as a member of the board. He had devoted his lifetime to the interests of the sanatorium patients and he intend§d to continue his regular visits to the sanatorium. The chairman, Mr H. J. Otley, said that the sanatorium had a large place in Mr Smith's heart and he did everything within his power for it. He wanted to thank Mr Smith most sincerely for his good work during his many years as a member, and to express regret at his retirement. On Mr Otley's motion the board decided to send Mr Smith a letter of appreciation. Several speakers paid tribute to his work a's a member.
