TURF GOSSIP Inopportune There is a doubt about Recollection fulfilling his southern engagement as he has developed splint trouble. This gelding was otherwise in excellent order for the trip and looked likely to collect more than one stake. His owner, Mr W. Parsons, has also lost the services for the holidays of his hurdler Vitaphone because of recurring lameness. A Sudden Rise To be backed 15 times better than at a previous start is a big increase in confidence. But it was shown in the case of the four-year-old Huntette at Otaki last Saturday. On this she should bear watching during the holidays. Free Gold Though the opposition was probably noorest in any field during the day, Free Gold impressed as an early winner by the way in which he hung on in his rase at Otaki last Saturday. It was his first test beyond six furlongs. He will be racing at Awapuni on Saturday. , Defending Their Titles The horses who filled the three places in the Fitzherbert Handicap at Awa- . puni last year—Land Tax, Invoice, and Symcony—are engaged again on Saturday; but they have a very,much tougher lot of opponents to settle on this occasion and any of them will be at a good price to win. A Successful Habit Though Cuddle won so well at Otaki last Saturday, it is possible to pay too much heed to the form, says the Wellington "Post." She was able to play one of her old slip-the-field jokes, and when she does get away like this she is a very hard mare to catch. It is probable that she will also attempt to win the Auckland Cup by this ruse, suddenly sprinting away, and if none wakes up to the move in time she may be still in front at the post. Has the Credentials Although Fersen ran third in last year's Auckland Cup and won the New Zealand Cup last month, he has not been seriously discussed for Saturday's big event at Ellerslie. He has, howcvjer, got through a solid preparation at New Plymouth, and his stable followers are confident that he will once again be prominent at the end of the long journey. He will be ridden by R. McTavish. Entail's Good Chance Entail was disappointing in his five races earlier in the season, but with a restfrom racing since the Wellington meeting in October he may be ready for an improved effort in the Grandstand Handicap at Awapuni on Saturday. Last season, when he won the Great Northern Guineas and the New Zealand St. Leger Stakes (beating Greek Shepherd), he was only twice unplaced in 11 starts. Entail will encounter strong opposition on Saturday in a race which usually has drawn rather moderate quality. However, there is nothing of his proved class engaged, though Friesland, Arctic King, Passion Flower, Orac, Hunting Queen, and Boomerang are good handicappers in receipt of concessions. His best effort this season was his fourth under 9-1 (21b more than he has on Saturday) to Kelly over a mile at the Auckland Spring Meeting.

Well-bred Trotters Lustre, engaged in the Mitcham | Handicap at Ashburton, is a five-yeai-Sd mare P by Wrack-Pearl Pointer, and is trained at Addington by G. Mc Kendry. Lustre .is well bred for hei dam, Pearl Pointer, is by Logan Pointer-Pearlchild, one of the be•nares ever at the stud in New ZeaSnd and is a sister to Childe Pointer and half-sister to Sea Pearl, Nantwich, and First Wrack. Pearl Pointer has proved successful as a matron for her orogeny include good trotters in Kempton, Nicoya, and White Satin, and a smart pacer in Return Voyage. If breeding counts for anything, Lustre should develop into a highgrade trotter. Another trotter with breeding credentials, if nothing else, is Gracie Fields, trained by R. Townley. She is four years old and is by Native King, who was by Nelson Bingen from a great brood mare, Norice. and a brother to Nelson Derby. Native King won the Dominion Handicap, and Reta Peter, also a trotter, twice won the New Zealand Cup. Probably Gracie Fields, like Lustre, is a trotter in the making, and may need experience before she shows anything approaching real class trottine. Notes from Southland j

The Southland correspondent of "The Press" writes as follows: Golden Miller raced encouragingly for a fourth placing each day at Forbury Park, and she has done well for the Wyndham trainer, E. Todd, in the meantime. Off 12 yards in the President's Handicap at Gore on Boxing Day she will be one of the hardest to beat. She has raced only once on Southland tracks since entering Todd's stable towards the end of last season, securing a good second at Invercargill. Todd's stable will also have a big say with Roan Duke in the E. A. Pigeon Memorial Handicap. This Wellington Direct pacer displayed more than average promise last season for one win and three minor placings, and this season he won at the first time of asking. At the Southland Racing Club's spring meeting Roan Duke won comfortably over a mile and a quarter in 2min 52 2-ssec. He is regarded as one of the best pacers that has been through Todd's hands for some time, and the Wyndham trainer has prepared many good performers in recent years. A solidlybuilt pacer, Roan Duke has displayed every promise of developing into a stayer, as well as possessing a useful turn of speed. Although opposed to useful and promising northerners in Double Great, Renown's Best, Ma Waro, Rollalong, and Tawny in the Gore Trotting Cup, Southland stables will play a prominent part with eight representatives. The chances of Double Great, Renown's Best, and Ma Waro are favoured in the south. Tawny's win over a mile and a half at Forbury Park brought him into the limelight. Southlanders, however, will be faithful to Harold Guy, Blue Spark, and Belle Grattan, three proved performers, who before long will probably I race themselves out of the best Southland class, and will be sent to Canterbury. Harold Guy has the best credentials, and he will probably be favourite. A natural pacer, and a quick beginner, he graduated to cup class last season, winning at Gore last Boxing Day over 13 furlongs, after running two seconds in his previous three starts. Later at Invercargill he won decisively over a mile and a half in 3min 23 2-ssec from 48 yards behind — record time for the track. Although he has raced only once over two miles, the effort was a good one. In the Wyndham Cup he finished a close second to Valdor, and he was one of the few of the field to finish on in the manner of a stayer. Blue Spark is in particularly good order, and A. J. Scott will land him at the post lacking nothing in condition. Scott has worked wonders with this speedy pacer, who had a reputation as an erratic performer last season. He has settled down, and he won two races in good style. In February he beat Stirling Lady at Gore over a mile and a half in 3min 23 2-ssec, and at his last start he won over a mile and five furlongs at Wyndham in 3min 40sec. He has been working well over two miles.

EFFICIENT MANAGEMENT COMMENT BY MR H. F. NICOLL Comments on the management of racing in England, and on one or two points of difference between English and New Zealaid practice, were made by Mr H. F. Nicoll in an interview yesterday, when discussing his recent visit to England. ■ The management of racecourses in England was excellent, Mr Nicoll stated. The stewards had sole control, and were exceedingly strict in their conduct of the racing. Mr Nicoll saw three or four horses disqualified that would not have been disqualified in New Zealand. The slightest crossing or jostling would put a horse out. It was notable that long evidence in such cases was not the rule. The stewards acted on what they saw themselves. It was noticeable also that races never started more than two to four minutes after the advertised time. Racegoers backed horses on their own oninions more than they did in New Zealand, and there was no sign of their waiting .to see what was going to be trie favourite. There was a steady stream to the totalisator windows from the time they opened. A daily double was run by all the clubs in England. This was conducted on the third and fifth races, and an investor was allowed to pick his fancy for the first leg, and if it won he then had until the totalisator closed on the fifth race to pick his second leg. A notable double event pool was that conducted on the Cesarewitch and t lie Cambridgeshire. The price was 2s 6d a unit before September 24, then 5s until October 6, and then 10s until October 14, the day of the Cesarewitch. The 1935 pool on these events paid JP.Mflt «■ "«it

ASHBURTON T.C. PROGRAMME FOR SATURDAY Although the Ashburton Trotting Club has been the leader in providing classic .races, it is many years since prospects for a good meeting were so promising as for Saturday'si fttfure. While the New Zealand Champion Stakes may be regarded as the second test tor three-year-old supremacy, the interest of the public will be maintained by the excellently arranged programme of handicap events Classic racin" is always interesting, and three-year-olds of the type of Parisienne Southern Chief, Frisco Boy Donald Dhu. Dark Hazard, Loyal Pat, and Toorak do not often parade in the Fame season. There may have been better three-year-olds than Parisienne, who up to the present, is the recognised champion of her age but it is doubtful whether in the history of trotting in New Zealand so many good class -juveniles have-been called on to do battle. The stake of 650 sovs is a big incentive to owners, and from all appearances the race will be worthy of the prize. The Ashburton Cup, of 675 sovs, can be depended upon to provide a keen contest for some of the best pacers in commission, and the meeting of Roi l'Or Blue Mountain, Cloudy Range, and War Buoy may in itself be worth the pilgrimage. The champion trotters will provide one of the greatest races of the year. The racegoing public dearly loves the uphoppled trotter, and will watch with the greatest interest the performances of Sea Gift, Trampfast, Wrackler, Bessie Parrish, and Discord in a race confined to the best horses in commission. The Ashburton Trotting Club may be assured of a record crowd, and it has made every arrangement to deal with it. Special trains will leave Christchurch at 9.20, 9.35, and 9.50 a.m., and there should be little difficulty in the transport of the big crowd that will make the journey. Patrons of the inside enclosure will appreciate the new arrangements that have been made for admission to the course, and the new turnstile entrance will relieve much of the congestion that has been noticeable at meetings in years past. The day's racing will commence at 12.15 p.m., and the club is determined to adhere to time-table so far as the starting of races is concerned.
