The Oamani Fixture Welcome rain fell in North Otago on Monday and again yesterday, and the Oamaru race track promises to be in excellent order for the Oamaru Jockey Club’s summer meeting on January 2. In the opinion of the club’s president. Mr K. Austin, the course has never been better than it is at present, and with well-filled fields the meeting should be one of the most successful he’d by the club for many years. Wairarapa Racing Club

For the Wairarapa Racing Club's New Year meeting. Black Frost and Mea Mea, winners at Otaki on Saturday. are not now eligible to compete in the Novice Handicap. Master Hector was omitted from the Novice (8-7) and Champion Hack Handicap (7-7), and Lady Cheval 7-8 was omitted from the Wharekaka Hack Handicap. The following rehandicaps have been declared:—Revival from 7-10 to 8-3 in the Champion Hack Handicap. Export from 7-12 to 8-5 in the Wharekaka Hack Handicap, and Huntette from 7-13 to 8-9 in the Electric Hack Handicap. Rider Suspended Three riders got into trouble at the Melbourne Ascot meeting on December 12. including F. J. McKay, who has been both trainer and rider for Mr W. T. Hazlett for some years. McKay rode Luminare, a five-year-old mare by Chief Ruler from Illume, in a race, and being found guilty of crowding two other horses, was suspended for a month. Oratory in Demand

For the Railway Handicap at Ellerslie Oratory has been made the logical favourite, not only in view of her good win at Feilding. but because that effort indicated that she must be nearly back to her best. On her last appearance at Ellerslie, last Easter, Oratory created a big impression, and it is believed that if the Marton galloper can only get back to that form she will win the big Ellerslie sprint.

An interesting Juvenile Engaged at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s summer meeting on Saturday is the Pink Coat—Victory Bond coll Silver Bond, who was purchased by Mr G. J. Barton at Trentham last January for 550 guineas. Silver Bond, ridden by J. W. Jennings, ran second at Caulfield last month in a strong two-year-old field, and that form makes him worthy of consideration at Wingatui, and one likely to cause most trouble to Top Row. License Suspended

TURF GOSSIP

Track Work at Rlccarton Practically all the work at Riccarton yesterday was delayed until after the breakfast interval, most of the usual early workers having left ’'or the North Island. The No. 6 grass was open, and it provided fast going, times being, however, affected by a head ■wind down the straight. A Strong Team

Palmyra and Rousseau finished together at the end of seven furlongs in Imin 30 3-ssec, the last three in 39 3-ssec. Their stable mate, Polydora, had a slight advantage from Tunneller after covering a mile in Imin 43ssc, the first half in 50 3-ssec. Palmyra, Rousseau, and Polydora will race at Wingatui, and the Southland meetings, and the two first-named will probably stay for the Vincent fixture on January Sand 9. Swordstick, from the same stable, will go to the West Coast in charge of M. Kirwan, who will also take over Culotte.

Smart Sprints Convivial did some strong work from the mile to the half-mile post, and ran home in 50 4-ssec. She should race prominently on her southern trip. Nightbound and Gresham occupied 50 2-ssec for four furlongs, finishing abreast.

An enquiry into the cause of the fall of three horses at Albion Park (Melbourne) on December 12 had a remarkable sequel when a jockey, W. Hill, threw his license on the table, and declared: “If what you gentlemen say is true I am guilty of attempted murder. I will hand in my license. I am sorry, gentlemen, but I am going.” As Hill made his way out of the room, a steward called: “Come back here." But Hill retorted; “No, thank you, I am going.” Hill has been one of the leading riders in Queensland for many years, and for a number of years held a retainer from Mr M. Ryan, a Queensland Turf Club committeeman. It is probable that Hill’s career finished at Albion Park. He is well off, and is getting on in years, and had intimated several times in the last year or two that he might retire at any time. He headed the winning jockeys’ list last season for the sixth time. TROTTING NOTES Reminder Acceptances for the Canterbury Park meeting will close on Monday. Ashburton Trotting Club Patrons of the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday will appreciate the many improvements that have been made and none more than the new arrangements that have been made for admission to the* lawn. At previous meetings the one gate was altogether too small to admit both outside and lawn patrons and much congestion often resulted in delay of intending backers on the first race. There will be few complaints after Saturday’s meeting, for arrangements have been made for the lawn entrance from Racecourse road. This will relieve the congestion at the usual entrance, and will require only the one payment. From what can be learned in sporting circles the Ashburton Trotting Club will find all its latest improvements taxed to the utmost for its popular Boxing Day meeting. Special Trains For the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting on Boxing Day special trains will leave Christchurch at 9.20 a.m., 9.35 a.m., and 9.50 a.m. The first race will commence at 12.15 p.m. •

Rotokino reeled off a similar task in 49 l-ssec, and the novice Kairangi, by Dolomite from Miss Bradbury, followed in 49 4-ssec. This pair should pay their way on the West Coast. The latter is an exceptionally free mover, and shows marked promise. Forum, joined by Night Dance at six furlongs, ran seven in Imin 31 3-5 sec, the last three in 40 l-ssec.

The Best Six Owl’s Gleam recorded the best six furlongs task of the morning in Imin 16 2-ssec, and her stable mate Oriental King sprinted three in 38sec. This pair will be taken to the West Coast circuit by W. McDonald Knockfin covered six furlongs comfortably in Imin 18 2-ssec, the last half-mile in 51 4-ssec. Impressive Gallop

Gaysome showed her usual dash in running five furlongs in Imin 2sec, the last three in 38sec. She has improved in every way in her track manners, and is at present in her best order. Recollection beat Cape Gabo after covering six furlongs in Imin 18 3-ssec, the last three in 40sec. The former looks as if he will turn out a great bargain for Mr W. Parsons, who purchased him from Sir Charles Clifford a few months ago. Golden Dart, who is to make his reappearance after a long absence at Hokitika on Saturday, ran five furlongs in Imin 5 2-ssec, the last three in 39sec. He will be accompanied on the trip by Arrowglen, who ran half a mile in 51 2-ssec. Willie Win and Orange Bud were companions over six furlongs in Imm 18 2-ssec, the last three in 39sec. For Tauherenikau

Trotting at Westport For its meeting which will commence on Boxing Day, the Westport Trotting Club has received excellent acceptances, for of the original list of nominations only six horses failed to make the second payment. The New Brighton trained Red Flyer and Black Marble are already on the scene of operations and both should win races at the meeting. Red Flyer is a particularly good type of pacer only in need of experience and although Black Marble did not do well at Greymouth, he is capable of much better racing. L. Davidson’s two pacers are in excellent order for immediate engagements and have been nominated amongst the small fry with every prospects of success.

La France and Joyous galloped a mile in Imin 45 3-ssec, the second half in 52 l-ssec, the former finishing m front. This pair will race at the Wairarapa New Year meeting, and will return to Riccarton at the conclusion of the programme. On the Plough

Trained at Westport Although visiting horses are expected to gain a fair share of the prize money at the Westport meeting they are not going to have matters all their own way for the locally trained brigade are in good order and have had good experience at the matinee meetings. Of horses trained in the district the special correspondent of “The Press” writes as follows; — The local horses are in fine order for their engagements. Lady Ann is in splendid order and from the way she won at the matinee meeting on Thursday over a mile and a half in 3min 30sec looks certain to win a race on the circuit.

Palady and Davolo finished in front of Glenavon after leaving six furlongs behind in Imin 18sec. On Course Proper

Vintage traversed a mile in Imin 47sec, the reverse way. He pulled up sound, and it is now suggested that he will race on the second day at Dunedin and later in the Waikouaiti Cup. Bred for Speed D. Cotton has received an addition to his team in a three-year-old filly by Paper Money from the Solferino mare Verinthia, half-sister to Rapier, and dam of Gold Cross and Rebel Chief. She is well grown, and- shows signs of being a speedy galloper. She is owned by her breeder, Mr A. S. George, who is now training Gold Cross himself. Back from Melbourne

Cantata, who finished second to Lady Ann at the matinee meeting, paced a mile and a half from 60 yards behind in the excellent time of 3min 26sec. This mare is now in J. Spillane’s care, and will reach good class. Doubt, a five-year-old gelding by Nelson Derby—Logan Lou, previously trained by B. Grice, is a recent arrival in Westport and is owned by the Walshe brothers. He has a win and a dead-heat to his credit, and C. Walshe has him pacing nicely. Travis Thorn, another contender for main events, is pacing better than ever and with luck should collect some prize money for his owner, Mr J. Durnin.

J. W. Jennings arrived at Bluff on Monday from Melbourne, and will remain in the south for the Dunedin arid Southland meetings. He will ride Queen of Song and Top Row at Wingatui on Saturday. A Big Exodus With few exceptions all the Riccarton stables will have renresentatives racing in seme part of New Zealand ever the holiday period. The following is a list of horses engaged at the various meetings on Saturday:— Auckland; Argentic, Trench Fight, Bun Fight. Impersonator, Gustos, Cerne Abbas, Royal Chief, Ponty, Greek Gold, Roaming, Lofty,

Of the maiden class performers High Noon seems to stand out. He is in wonderful condition and pacing in his work like a class horse. He is highly strung, but should he begin at all smartly more than one stake will come his way. Silk Attire has recovered from his lameness, and he impressed spectators in a work-out with High Noon over the week-end.

Manawatu: In the Dark. Tout le Monde, Top Notch, Screamer, Lazybones, Allspice, Thermidor, Paper Slipper, Emissary, Invoice, Dollar Bill, Lustral.

Parralax, under F. Scott, has been working better and looking better than ever she did, but had the misfortune to meet with an accident on Thursday. This has placed her on the easy list, but her trainer is hopeful of getting her to the races. Of the trotters’ section Dollar Maid is looking a picture, and if she can be induced to go solidly she will account for several races.

Dunedin; Nightbound, Rousseau, Coming Star, Knockfin, Polydora, JDavolo, Tunneller, Great Star, Recollection, Orange Bud, Palmyra, Gaysome, Willie Win, Convivial, Cape Gabo, Forum.

Westland: Maka Ahi. Kairangi, W r ine Card, Golden Dart, Gold Label, Rotokino, Culotte, Derive, Marcha, Fiord, Rebel Chief, Swordstick, Glenavon, Silver Slipper, Dark Rose, Cyclonic, Hossock. Taranaki: Redolent

The Auckland Trotting Cup Grand Mogul’s position as favourite for the Auckland Trotting Cup has strengthened since acceptances, says the Auckland “Star.” His rise to the top class was rapid, as he opened last season on a 4min Slsec mark, and eight successes during that term landed

ON SODDEN TRACKS GALLOPS AT WINGATUI (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) DUNEDIN, December 22. After nearly 60 hours’ steady rain at Wingatui, the tracks were sodden this morning. The extreme outside of the course proper was available for fast work. Surge, who was conceding weight to the two-vear-old Stromholi, was going the better ; of the pair at the end of five furlongs in Imin 15 3-ssec. New -Note took Imin 17 2-3 sec for the same journey, while Pink Del's time was Imin 21 3-ssec.

Waltham was easing up at the finish of a six furlong gallop which occupied Imin 37sec.

Astaire was stopping badly at the end of five furlongs in Imin 22sec. Grand Finale was sent 10 furlongs, and after taking 56sec for the first half mile, finished very strongly over the last two furlongs, taking 2min 38 2-ssec for the full journey. Araboa ran half a mile in 64 3-ssec, going easily throughout. Song'"Boy was going better than Brilliant Boa at the end of five furlongs in Imin 14 l-ssec.

Silver Jest headed Vallock in the last few strides of a similar task in Imin 16 sec.

Viking was 'going easily throughout a half mile sprint. Natty and Green Boa finished together both under strong pulls, at the end of seven furlongs In Imin 40scc. Radio Star took Imin 1 4-ssec to run half a mile. Norseman ran four furlongs in 53 4-ssec.

Trumpet Blast was let off with half pace work and looks well. A largo number of horses were cantered on the inside grass or hurdle tracks, including Toreador, Silver Bond, Gay Circle, Gambler's Luck, Octane, Trandvih, and Final Bell. TRACK WORK AT ELLERSLIE RICCARTON HORSES GALLOP WELL

(PRSS9 ASSOCIATIO* TILXOEAM.) AUCKLAND. December 22. Conditions were ideal for the semi-final gallops at Ellerslie this morning. The going on the course proper 50 feet out from the rails was excellent. Several horses worked on the tan and the sand, and there was some schooling over the hurdles in the centre. A feature of the work was a mile and a quarter work-out by the Auckland Cup candidates Flood Tide. Scotland, Kelly, Werohia, and Master Brierly. Another Cup horse. Argentic, was responsible for the best seven furlongs of the morning, while the three-year-olds Cerne Abbas and Custos also galloped well. On the Course Proper Bunfight covered four furlongs in 49sec, a smart effort. This filly has done little racing in the last 12 months, but looks well. Kilonsa travelled over six furlongs In Imin 18 4-ssec, the first three being covered in 39 l-ssec.

Impersonator went four furlongs, going comfortably.

Fleetwind and Royal Chief were on terms after five furlongs in Imin 4 l-ssec, the first two taking 24 4-ssec.

Trench Fight was not extended In a trial over seven furlongs in imin 34 3-ssec. the first half-mile in 52 2-ssec.

Round Up did a smart half-mile in 50 3-ssec, giving Tybalt a start and beating him comfortably. The latter's time was 52 2-ssec. Round Up’s effort was a good one.

Oratory covered the last half of a mile in 51 4-ssec,

Cerne Abbas and Custos were on terms after six furlongs done in Imin 17 3-ssec, the first three taking 38 3-ssec. Interesting Cup Trial

Flood Tide, Scotland, Kelly. Master Brierly, and Werohia were companions over a mile and a quarter, and finished in that order after running the distance in 2min 17 2-ssec. The last round took 2min 6 3-sscc, the mile Imin 46 2-Dscc. six furlongs Imin 21sec, and the final three furlongs 39 2-ssec. They did not have a great deal of pace on in the early part, and Flood Tide, who finished on solidly, was responsible for a most pleasing effort. Scotland also did his work well. Smart Juveniles The Great Northern Foal Stakes candidates Smoke Screen and Francis Drake displayed a lot of speed to complete a half-mile in 50 l-sscc, the first furlong in 12 2-ssec. There was nothing between them at the finish. Smoke Screen, who had the outside running, was impressive, as he has not had as much experience as his companion. The two-year-olds Relative and Greenwich were associated over a half-mile in 59 l-ssec. This was also a smart effort. There was not much between them at the finish.

Jack Tar just shaded King Neptune while traversing six furlongs in Imin 21 2-ssec, the first three in 39 2-ssec. De Friend and Shy, after running the first half-mile In 50 2-ssec, completed seven furlongs in Imin 31 4-ssec, on terms at the finish. De Friend is working well since his arrival here, and should earn some money at the meeting.

Armacourt went seven furlongs In Imin 32 3-ssec. Aero King was slightly ahead of White Foam, after reeling off four furlongs in 51 2-ssec, the first in 12 2-ssec. Aero King has improved a good deal during the last couple of weeks, but lack of experience may be against him at the meeting. Haut Monde and Mandamus covered the last five furlongs in Imin 4 4-sscc. Argentic’s Best Seven

After trotting a round on the inside of the grass. Argentic came on to the course proper and completed seven furlongs in Imin 30 l-sscc, the best of the morning over the distance. Pladie joined him at the six-furlong post and they ran home from there in ,lmin 17 4-ssec, Argentic beating him comfortably. It was a good trial, but Argentic appeared to move a bit short at the start. Useful Tasks Legatee covered half a mile in 52sec, and ran fairly wide out at the turn into the straight. Aiwai ran a smart half-mile in 50 2-5 sec, the first furlong in 12 2-ssec, and was finishing on well. Great Hope and Chief Ranger ran the first three furlongs in 33 3-ssec, and six in Imin 20sec. The gallop will bring Great Hope into favour for the Queen’s Plate. On the Tan The southerners Roaming and Lofty finished a useful task by running the last half-mile in 55 4-ssec.

Knight of Australia completed a round in Imin 55 2-ssec, the last six furlongs in Imin 24 3-sssc, and the final half-mile in 55 l-ssec. This horse is in capital condition. Plato, after running the first three furlongs in 41 3-ssec, got to the end of six in Imin 24 2-ssec. He was under restraint throughout. Huntingmore revealed a lot of dash over three furlongs in 33 3-ssec, a really good effort.

Royal Appellant ran right away from Valspcar over the concluding stages of six furlongs in Imin 21 4-ssec.

Greek Gold and Big Dook worked separately on this track, but were not after time.

Arrivals this morning included Brunhilde, The Crooner, Martara, Cuddle. Sunee, and Essex.

him on a 4min 29sec mark at its close. He gave away a second to contest the King Edward Handicap, a 4min 28sec class, so that this success, for which he was penalised 24 yards, actually cost him 36 yards. Grand Mogul has proved himself a true stayer and has exceptional speed, as evidence his last mile of a trial at Addington in 2min 5 2-ssec, and the last half in less than a minute. The only thing that will discount his prospects is a heavy track. So far he has been purely a dry-track pacer. Of the others. Graham Direct. King's Warrior, and Red Shadow are the most discussed at this stage. The following table shows the marks and records of the candidates:—

Emissary sprinted three furlongs down the back in 41 l-ssec. The maidens. Allspice and Aurora’s Love, finished strongly after running half a mile in 54 4-ssoc. . The Manawatu Cup horses. Round Scoi and Tout le Monde, occupied Imln 3'i 4-sscc for seven furlongs. Black Thread and Fine Stitch finished nicely over five furlongs in Imin 7sec. Symcony showed a lot of pace in dashing three furlongs down the back in 36 2-ssec, Gay Molly took 53 l-ssec for half a mile. Dungarvan finished comfortably alongside Taumau at the end of an easy seven furlongs in Imin 37sec. The Manawatu Cup favourite worked very well. Old Surrey and Finnesko were not out to make time over five furlongs. Cloudy Bay could have improved on Imin 20 l-sscc for six furlongs. Dawning Light took 53isec for half a mile. Most of the other horses worked on the plough, which was fast. On this track Gainsay and Evermore came home the last three furlongs in 38 4-sscc. Hunting Mars took Imin 7 3-ssec for five furlongs. Invoice just shaded In the Dark over three furlongs in 37Jsec. Pango and Le Touquet worked well over five furlongs. Gay Boy, heavily bandaged, ran a mile and a half at three-quarter pace. The two-year-olds, Hot Shot, Orient Dawn, and Tipsy Miss, finished in that order over two furlongs from the barrier in 25 3-ssec. AUCKLAND NOTES TRACK WORK AT EPSOM [THE PRESS Special Service.] AUCKLAND, December 22. With the flags out 36 feet at Epsom this morning, Red Shadow and Bingen Palm ran the last half-mile of two miles in Imin 4sec, lowering the working record of Jewel Pointer, Imin 5 l-ssec, but the flags were further out when the latter put up his time. Apart from the last half, which showed their speed, the effort was not a cup test, as the two miles took smin Isoc. Star Pronto, a half mile in Imin 5 3-ssec, was the next best, and he ran the full mile and a half in 3min 36scc. Nervie’s Last got up to finish alongside Mountain Flight at the end of 10 furlongs in 2min 59sec, the last half, not overtaxed, in Imin 6 3-sscc. For one in her class, Mountain Flight did well to go Imin 7sec. Rey Spec, assisted for a mile and a hall by Baron Grand, who is very fit, was not hustled to run two miles a shade better than a 2min 30sec gait, the last half in Imin Bsec. Spessiva went more smoothly than Tollgate in 3min 1 3-ssec, the final half in Imin lOscc. Parrish Belle trotted 3min 38sec, the last half in Imin 9sec, and Polly Pan went 3min 40sec and Imin lOsec. King’s Warrior was not included in F. J Smith's team, the black horse being a trifle sore, but it is not expected to keep him from his engagements. Grand Mogul, Bittersweet, and Rongomai arrived this morning, and Franz Derby came through from Palmerston North. Imposter, who is joining E. N. Kennerely’s stable, is due to-morrow. Plutus.
