CANTERBURY MARKETS

NEW SEASON’S PRICE DISCUSSED

OT OUB COUMBHCIAX KDITJ*) Tuesday evening. The committee on wheat production costs having concluded its deliberations, speculation is life as to what price will be fixed for next years crop. The committee was not charged with the task of making any recommendation as to price to the Government, but it was directed to submit a report based on the evidence taken at its sittings, embodying its estimate of what it cost a bushel to produce wheat. It is understood that this report has now gone forward, being in the hands ot the Minister for Industries and Commerce (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan), who will doubtless, in the 9rdinary course of events, consult Cabinet before announcing the new season’s price to the wheat grower. Another interesting possibility that L being discussed is the control of fowl wheat. This question was discussed by the recent conference of United Wheat Growers, Ltd., which carried a resolution asking the Government to extend its control so as to embrace all wheat. It is expected that, as this is a policy matter, it will be dealt with by the Minister when fixing the price for milling wheat. , . Meanwhile there is very hUle doing in the local grain and produce markets. which close down to-morrow for a short vacation, reopening on Tuesday of next week. Business passing has mostly to do with fowl wheat, and here the situation is unchanged, the market being firm at 5s f.0.b.. with supplies inclined to be short. There has been no development of any moment in oats. cbafT. or the small seeds markets, and quotations are unchanged.

Quotations The following are the prices quoted to farmers, on trucks, at country sidings. unless otherwise indicated:— Wheat—Milling grade, Tuscan 4s 9J.d, Hunters 4s llld. Pearl 5s lid. good i whole fowl wheat, prompt, to 5s i f.0.b.: under grade, to 4s lid, f.o.b. I Oats—A Cartons to 3s, B Cartons 2s lOd, Algerians to 2s 6d, Duns 3s 6d. Ryegrass—Perennial 2s 3d; Italian to Is 9d. Cocksfoot—Plains tld to 7d, Akaroa 7d to 8d per lb. Cowgrass—6d per lb. White Clover —7d to 9d per lb. Chaff—£3 a ton. Barley—Feed 2s 3d to 2s 4d a bushel. Peas—4s 6d to ss. Bran—Large £4 15s, small £5 ss. Pollard—Large £5 15s a ton, small £6 ss. AUCKLAND MARKETS [THE PRESS Special Service.] AUCKLAND, December 22. New potatoes are plentiful and merchants are quoting 3s to 3s 6d a sugar bag. Canadian onions, which have kept the market supplied in recent months, are almost exhausted, and the market will be clear of locals when they become available early in the New Year. The pollard position still constitutes a problem for city merchants; both local and Australian supplies are scarce, and there is difficulty in fulfilling orders, even though the imported article is priced at the high figure of £9 7s 6d a ton. Bran is plentiful and unchanged at £6 15s a ton. Another shipment of Java maize is on order, but it is not due until May. and is already being booke H up at approximately 7s a bushel through store. Fowl wheat is unaltered in price at 6s 8d a bushel, but dealers report the greatest difficulty in securing a line of decent quality. Barley, which was a boon to stock feeders early in the year because of its low price, is now almost as dear as other cereals, and a further advance has brought the price to 5s 6d a bushel for clipped. Stocks are low and merchants are rationing orders until the new season’s Australian crop becomes available early in the New Year. There has been no "change in horse feed, with B Cartons selling steadily at 4s 9d a bushel, and chaff at £8 12s 6d a ton. WAIREWA DAIRY COMPANY The Wairewa Dairy Company <Cooperative) will shortly be paying out a further bonus of Id for the 1935-36 season, making a total payment of Is Id for the season. This is said to equal the Christchurch factory payout
