OFFICIAL FORECASTS

ITHE PRESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON, December 21. The Dominion Observatory's weather forecast for Canterbury and Marlborough, issued at 5 p.m., and dealing with the 24 hours following the time of issue, is as follows: Moderate to strong northwesterly winds, turning later to southerlies. Weather, cloudy to overcast, and some rain probable, temperatures becoming cooler. Seas rough north of Kaikoura; elsewhere moderate. The following is the Dominion forecast:— Weather fine on the East Coast ot the North Island, but elsewhere mainly cloudy or overcast. Further rain probable in western and southern portions of the South Island, with some heavy falls in Westland; some isolated showers also in western and central areas of the North Island. Temperatures warm, but becoming cooler later in the south. An anti-cyclone has continued to extend across northern New Zealand, but a series of westerly depressions is passing in the south. v

Winds—Variable at first in the far south, but mainly easterly or southeasterly; otherwise moderate to strong winds between north-west and southwest prevailing, reaching gale force Jit times about Cook Strait. Seas (New Zealand waters)— Rough m the Cook Strait area and rather rough on the West Coast of the South Island; elsewhere slight to moderate. Eastern Tasman—Moderate to strong westerly winds, backing later to southerlies in the southern portion; seas, moderate to rather rough.

CHRISTCHURCH WEATHER

The weather in Christehureh yesterday was warm and sultry, with an overcast sky and a strong nor-west wind. There was a fog late in the evening. The maximum temperature was 70.8 degrees.
