Reminders Acceptances for the Canterbury Park meeting will close on Monday. Change of Trainers At one stage Diversion, the four-year-old filly by Rey de Oro—Escapade, looked like developing into one of the best pacers in New Zealand, but recently she appears to have lost form. She is now under the care of G. McKendry, and a course of training in company at headquarters may bring her back to her best.

May Improve Llewellyn's Pride has been racing badly for seme time, and since the New Brighton meeting he has been given a course of road work with an occasional run on the tracks. The change appears to have done him good, and he has freshened up well. His next engagement will probably be at Canterbury Park.

TURF GOSSIP

Reminder Acceptances for the Wyndham Racing Club's annual meeting will close to-day. Chief Light Dead Mr W. T. Hazlett's gelding Chief Light, at one time trained by E. Scoullar at Riccarton, met his death while schooling at Caulfield on December 9. He fell at the second fence and broke his neck. Chief Light was a winner over hurdles earlier in the season, and big things were expected of him during the forthcoming jumpinjg season. St. Simon Cross

Apollo Apollo has been off the scene for some months, but he is due to make his reappearance at the Oamaru Jockey Club's meeting early next month. In his early track work at Addington Apollo gained many friends, but in his few races he has not proved a champion. In His Class

It was only by a narrow margin that Besiege won the Ohaupo Hack Handicap at the Waipa meeting last Saturday, but he ran on very resolutely and may prove very useful when his powers are fully developed, says "Archer." He has an interesting pedigree, being by General Latour (a son of Soult and grandson of St. Simon) from Eikoriko, by Day Comet (a son of St. Frusquin and grandson of St. Simon) from Kilbeggan, by Kilbroney, and if anything, he should prove a stayer. He is owned by the Waipa Club's president, Mr M. H. Tims, who bred him. Up to the present he has had very little racing, arid looks capable of improvement. For Awapuni

Brigadier is not the best of stayers but he has improved respect of late, and he should make his presence felt at the Westport meeting, where the company he will be opposed to is not above the average. A Useful Trotter

Indian Scout showed a good deal of promise when he filled minor placings in his two outings at the Methven meeting, and he would need to show little improvement to be returned a winner at the Gore fixture on Boxing Day. Indian Scout is a six-year-old chestnut gelding by Native King—Ernestina, and is in P. Gallagher's stable. The Trotting Carnival

The big trotting carnival will commence on Saturday, and from one end of New Zealand to the other, where the galloping sport is not in progress, trotting will provide entertainment for thousands of horse-lovers throughout the Dominion. At Ashburton on Boxing Day Canterbury enthusiasts will enjoy one of the best day's racing ever provided in New Zealand and the Ashburton Cup, worth 675 sovs, is confined? to horses just outside New Zealand Cup class. Only 11 horses are engaged, the ideal field for such an important event, but the bracketing of Rollo and Blue Mountain and Tempest and Cloudy Range will confine operations to nine betting chances. The New Zealand Champion Stakes, after the New Zealand Derby, promises to provide the real test of superiority of three-year-olds, and here will be found competing the place-fillers in the New Zealand Derby—Parisienne, Frisco Boy, and Southern Chief. This will be a race of interest to all New Zealanders. On Boxing Day, too. the Gore Trotting Club will hold one of its all too rare fixtures and, with one day's racing in the year, the wonder is that it can afford a stake of 310 sovs for its principal event, besides providing good stake money for moderately performed horses. The support from outside owners is not what it has been in some previous years, but this may be accounted for by the outstanding attractions at Canterbury meetings. The Wairarapa Trotting Club, in a hard struggle to place trotting on the map in its district, has chosen a suitable date, and while it cannot yet afford to cater for the better class horses, the meeting should prove financially successful and should allow it to increase stakes for future meetings, and demand its fair measure of support. The Westport meeting has been a fixture for many years, and although attendance on the part of Canterbury owners requires much travelling. New Brighton and Addington stables will be represented. The Winton Trotting Club's meeting will b? held on December 29 and the Auckland Trotting Club's meeting will extend over December 28, 30. and 31. A well arranged programme of well-endowed races may allow drivers to be back again in Canterbury for the meeting at Adding lon on January 1 and 2, on the completion of which Grey mouth will hold its annual fixture on January 4 anc7 5. For the next fortnight or so there will be a wealth of racing for everyone, and with the growing popularity of the sport, most successful meetings should be the rule. New Zealand appears to be well served at this season of the year, but a close study of the Trotting Calendar will prove that several clubs that are making a brave attempt to carry on under one permit a year could well do with two or more. In another 12 months these ex.tra permits may be granted and clubs will then be in a position to increase stakes, make improvements to their courses, and cater better for the light harness sport. Champion Class The most interesting race to be decided during the holiday meetings will be the New Zealand Champion Stakes, of 650 sovs. for three-year-olds, and staged by the Ashburton Trotting Club, says the "Otago Daily Times." It provides a great incentive to breeders to patronise high-class stallions as the only generally reliable method of getting winners capable of reaching frontrank form. The stakes supply temptation to travel on common sense lines leading to a breeder's ambition. Rank and file performers may gather a stake here and there, but their success never gathers the glamour of a win such as that achieved in a Champion Stakes. Success in such a race gathers both a present and potential reward, as it pays and also points the way to the lines leading to the future.

Paper Slipper, Top Notch, Day Dress, Thermidor, and Lazybones, in charga of A. Cutts, Dollar Bill, Lustral, and Screamer will be shipped north tonight to compete at the Manawatu meeting opening on Saturday. Redolent will also be sent north today by S. Barrto be raced at the Taranaki and Stratford meetings. Ridden by J. Murfitt, he gave an excellent display over four hurdles yesterday. He will probably be ridden on the trip by W. J. Bowden. Southern Visitors .

. Polydora, Rousseau, Palmyra, and Nightbound will be railed to Dunedin to night, and Tunneller. Knockfin,. Willie Win, Gaysome, and Orange Bud will go south to-morrow. Vintage will not make the trip, as it has been deemed advisable to give him an easy time over the holiday period in the hope that he will be able to race at the Wellington Cup meeting next month. Another Trial

Polygraph will in future be trained by F. Trilford at Washdyke, who no doubt will try him out as a hurdler. A Severe Loss

The speedy three-year-old filly Pink Polly, by Pink Coat from Pollyform, dam of Nightform, died on Sunday from, it is thought, liver trouble. Trruned by S. Barr for Mr J. Morrison, of South Canterbury, Pink Polly created a good impression by a win at Washdyke in March last, and her future prospects looked bright. A Wide Area

Barr's team will be widely distributed during the holidays. Recollection and Cape Gabo will be at the Dunedin, Waikouaiti, and Oamaru meetings; Gold Label, Stiver Slipper, Fairway, and Pink Ahbey will attend the West Coast circuit, and Redolent will be in the Nortir Island. Vitaphone, who was nominated for southern meetings, had a recurrence of his leg trouble after a few weeks at New Brighton, and has had to be eased up again. A Poor Effort

Lynch Law, the crack two-year-old of the moment at the Sydney meetings, just escaped being stupidly named. It was originally suggested that Limbic, a combination of Limond and Drastic, would be suitable. Someone with more intelligence suggested Lynch Law as most appropriate for a son of Drastic. Nothing could be more drastic than lynch law. A Cup Fancy Week by week Floodtide is showing track watchers his superiority over galloping companions (says an Auckland critic). He is infusing much life into his work, and at Takanini he is confidently expected to give the district its first Auckland Cup success. The Tidal gelding is as fit as hands can make him, and. with his staying powers undoubted, he promises to be well supported on the day. Wanganui J.C. There is every probability of the Wanganui Jockey Club applying for the King's Birthday (December 14) as one of the dates for its summer meeting (says a Wanganui writer). The cup fixture of the Wanganui club was for many years one of the most successful racing attractions in the Dominion, but the depression seriously interfered with its success. It cannot be denied that she carried 7 10-0 and dealt with her opponents like her real- self In lac: her rirp and finish did tend to impress very much in the manner that she won her New Zealand Cup and Auckland Cup cf last season. On the other hand here is the undoubted weakness of Saturday's opposition Hunt™ Queen was the enly runner to offer any pretence of a challenge and while she was he"d safely at bay by Cuddle it cannot Ee said that Hunting Qu 2 en's form would justify her being accepted as a first class trial horse. She has previously raced in open class, but is really a promoted hack with certainly good form in that class but she has still to be proved against good handicap company. Even accepting Hunting Queen as a good trial horse, what about Terry"' Here is a mare just out oi hack class who got left many lengths at the start, and yet was a creditable third, only a counle of lengths from the winner. Terry may be on the way to unrevealed form much better than expected, but if Cuddle is a second successive winner of an Auckland Cup in prospect, could Terry give her that start and run her so close? Then there is the form of Martara to add to the puzzle. On Woodville running and the fact that Martara is expected to be dangerous in the Great Northern Derby Martara looked on paper to be the real trial horse of the field on Saturday. Therefore, if his running was correct and consistent. Cuddle should win the Auckland Cup. Hunting Queen should be a likely winner of the Manawatu Cup and Terry is verging on world's championship form. Martara's form has never been anything out of the ordinary even at Woodville. and Trench Fight was unlucky to be beaten by him at Trentham, but Martara. can do better tnan he did at Otaki. An Ambitious Trip

Sunee is another runner on Saturday who failed to act up to his capabilities. In his case the track may not have suited him but to take him to Auckland for the Cup seems like challenging fortune with a vengeance yet it will not be surprising to see him prominent at the end of two miles, and W. J. Broughton has accepted the mount on him. which will mean nearly half a stone, over-weight In the face cf his showing at Otaki few could give him any chance but the fact that his owner-trainer, J. W. Lowe, is satisfied to take him and put up over-weight to" get Broughton, indicates that the form in the principal event at Otago may prove .unreliable. Back to Form The only satisfaction that the average racegoer can get out of this puzzling situation is that Cuddle has returned to form, that she is a wonderful mare to recuperate as she has done, and that her trainer, T. George, is to be congratulated upon his achievement. Genera] Items-

Hazoor put on a lot of condition during his enforced respite from the active list and was in lusty shape at Otaki on Saturday. It will probably take a fair amount of racing to bring him to his best again. , Essex was running all over his opponents at the end of seven furlongs at Otaki and although the class was only moderate this food stayer has excellent prospects of paying his way on the Auckland trip. . L J. Ellis, who came up specially to ride Cuddle at Otaki, was having his first experience of the course. He was a bit unfortunate in his first ride, Trimden getting into a lot of trouble in the straight. Hunting Lodge ran a good race in the Wairongomai Handicap at Otaki, and with a bit of luck would have been harder. , , , ... Free Gold last season looked like making a really goo dthree-year-old this term, but he has taken a longtime to come right and his second at Otaki was the first indication that he had given of a return. He is looking well and, with improvement, appears a sure winner over the holidays. R. Marsh has been engaged to ride Sporting Blood in the Auckland Cup, and he will also be on Bold Blood, Sly Fox, and Jolly Dance at the meeting,, S.
