OLD SHIPWRECK OFF N.Z. COAST
LOSS OF BRIG FORTUNE RECALLED SYDNEY, December 18. The story of the old shipwreck of the brig Fortune off the New Zealand coast in 1868 was recalled in the Equity Court to-day at an enquiry into the next-of-kin of Thomas Petley, who died in June leaving an estate valued at £9600. During the evjdence a faded cutting from a Sydney newspaper was tendered showing that Petley's father, William Petley, master of the Fortune, was drowned with nine others. The sole survivor furnished a thrilling narrative of the sea, explaining that "natives appropriated a box with some sovereigns from the captain's chest." The captain's son, Thomas Petley, died intestate. The court referred the matter to the Master in Equity.
