DIGBY'S COMMERCIAL SCHOOL

A report that the year had been a particularly busy one and that there had been a big demand for trained students for office positions, exceeding that of former vears, was made in the annual review of the year's work of Digby's Commercial School, read last night at the annual prize giving ceremony In the annual Public Service examinations, 41 students had been successful, the largest number that had passed from the school so far. The five Christchurch passes in the special and intermediate examinations for higher grade positions had been gained by pupils of the school. In the Chamber of Commerce commercial examinations, 54 pupils of the school had been entered and 50 had gained passes. First year pupils had shown much promise and the classes for students preparing for matriculation and other examinations had been well attended. The sports club associated with the school had shown much activity during the year and three basketball and four hockey teams had been entered in the local competitions. The report expressed thanks to those who had given special prizes. During the evening a musical programme was presented, after which Mr V. E. Hamilton, president of the Chamber of Commerce, addressed the pupils and distributed the prizes. After the prizegiving dancing was held. The following was the prize-list:— Shorthand High Speed Prizes (gold medals presented by the Christchurch Shorthand Writers' Association)— Pitman's shorthand, 150 words a minute: Eileen i O'Connor, Brenda Sullivan, and Patricia | Townsend. Senior Bookkeeping (prize presented by "Well Wisher")—Moira D'Anvers. Junior Bookkeeping (Mrs Buchanan's prize)— Edna Stansell. Junior English (Miss Redman's prize)— Gene Collyer. Matriculation Class (Mr Henderson's prize)—Le.slie Stewart. Certificates of Merit Shorthand-Typists' Tests—lsabel Shrimpton (special), Patricia Townsend (intermediate), Rhoda Low (senior and junior). Shorthand Speed—llo words a minute: Hetty Massey, Enid McDonald, and Margaret Sugrue. Eighty words a minute. Jean Ashworth, Marie Wilson, and Rita Burrows. Typewriting—Joan Vandenberg and Doris Wear. Bookkeeping—Senior: Doris Wear and Mabel Prisk. Junior: Barbara Finch and Arthur L. Clark. Junior English—Edith Sanders. Junior Spelling—Veta Meikle. First Year Shorthand Tests—Margaret Liddon and Dulcie Weston. PITMAN'S COMMERCIAL COLLEGE A pleasant function was held at Pitman's Commercial College to celebrate the annual break-up. During the evening the principal, Miss Mary Collins, was presented with a bouquet and a perfume set from the students, Pupils from Miss Betty Carnochan's studio gave an Irish reel.
