NEW TYPES OF HOUSES

SUGGESTION FOR CLEARING CONGESTED AREAS An interesting opinion on the possible solving of the housing problem was given yesterday by Mr Paul Pascoe, who has just returned from studying architecture in Great Britain and Europe, where he has had the opportunity of seeing many of the great projects for the clearing of slums and the congested areas of big cities such as London. There were two projects which were engaging the thoughts of architects in Great Britain at the present time, said Mr Pascoe. The first was to build groups of separate one-storey cottages laid out according to the system of new roads.. The second was to build groups of five-storey buildings comprising unit flats. Both schemes could be built at an equal cost, and would allow an equal density of population, and the second type of building would be constructed of earthquake-proof material. The advantage of the second type was that there would be greater facilities for playing fields, swimming baths, tennis courts, and gardens and parks. Both svstems were being used by the London County Council and other local authorities, but the second scheme was being used the more. Mr Pascoe said that the construction of such large buildings to do away with the congested areas of Itfew Zea>l*a4 cities would be well worth while.
