OPERATION OF GOODS SERVICES

APPLICATIONS FOR LICENSES HEARD More licenses to operate goods carrying services in North Canterbury areas were renewed by the No. 3 Licensing Authority (Mr T. H. Langford), when the sitting at Waipara was concluded yesterday. The Railways Department, which was represented by Mr E. S. Brittenden, District Traffic Manager of Railways, at Christchurch, objected to a renewal of a part of the license of R. Campbell and Company (Scargill), allowing the company back loading of general goods after carrying stock to the Addington market. In asking that the license should allow the carriage frorm Christchurch of stock* only, Mr Brittenden said the Railways Department's ,loss on the Cheviot line, with which he contended Campbell and Company would be competing, was £22,000 last year. Campbell and Company's license was renewed until May 31, 1939, and the provision for back loading with scwt lots of general goods was allowed to be retained. Other applicants whose licenses were renewed were:—R. C. Meyers (Cheviot). H. D. Leaman (Spotswood), G. N. Hare (Waipara), E. W. Eckroyd (Waipara), C. I. Shadrach (Scargill), G. S. Roberts (Amberley), H. Adlingtcn (Amberley). W. E. Creed (Waiau); and T. E. Rapley (Cheviot), mails, small parcels, and cream, but no general goods. An application for a license from G. K. Lucas (Hanmer Springs), and one for an additional vehicle authority from W. E. Creed, were refused.
