! dominated in every part of the world. Yet, in spite of his remarkable remit: the line has gradually declined, until to-day practically the Only branches in existence in England witn even remote prosnects cf continuant are those cf Persimmon, through Prince Palatine, and cf Desmond, whose sen, liapsburg. is represented at the stud bv the promising young siro, Noble Star. Some idea of the decline of the line of Galopin, of which St. Simen's descendants are practically the > only representatives, may be gathered i'rern the family groups of winners published each year. In 1925 Galopin's line was third on the list with 310 winners ox 473 races and £113.697 in stakes. Yet, in only 10 years, the line has dropped to last of ihe Eclipse sires with 113 winners of 130 races and £30.500. It is hard to account for such a decline, and theorists have advanced many reasom, principally that of inbreeding, but evidently not until this year has any definite effort been made to reeurrcct the line. U seems uselessbuilding from the St. Simon line sires at present located in England, and for that reason any attempt at a revival of tne j real line had to include the importation of sicck from foreign strains It has been left to Sir Victor Sas:oon to make the first step, and his importation of the French-bred horse Mieuxce, a direct descendant in maletail, has been fully appreciated by English breeders, for although Mieuxce was only secured a few months ago, his list for the next two seas;:n3 n fully booked at 300 guineas. Mieuxce may do for the line of St. Simcn what Roi Hcrode did for the line of Herod. Roi Heroele was bought out of France lor tnat purpose alone, and the remarkable success he achieved was justification for the move. Pie introduced lines of blood from channels previously little u:ed by English breeders, and Mieuxce will, in that regard, follow in his foots'rps. SI. Simon is five removes from Mieuxce, and there is only the single strain of that horse in his pedigree. Mieuxce was a first-rate stayer, and won the French Derby and Grand Prix this year—one of the few horses to achieve the feat. A breakdown late in the summer terminated I his racing career, and Sir Victor Sas- i soon quickly bought him. He is bred | on the greatest of slaying lines. His | sire. Massine, leading sire in France in 1932 and 1933. won the Ascot Gold Cup in 1924. L'Olivette, his dam, won three races, and is by Opott, son of Maximum 11., who won the Ascot Gold Cup in 1903. Massine is by Consols, a son of St. Bris, who was by Florizel, brother to Persimmon, by St. Simon.

Paper; Slipper Though it. is very doubtful on his breeding if Paper Slipper will ever be a real stayer, he has been assessed on the that he might be in being set on 8-11 in the Wairarapa Cur>. Mr Henrys undoubtedly remembers that another Paper Money hcrso in Autopay found no difficulty in goin/j a mile end a quarter on the turning Tauherenikau course, and Paper Slipper, besides having won at a mile, is out of a Solferino mare. At Marton The Marton Jockey Club has received the following nominations for the two chief events on the first day's "card:—-Marton Cup, of 400 sovS; one mile and a quarter—Spiral, Entail, '" Tiger Gain, Arctic King, Sinking Fund, Hunting Mars, Siegmund, Aussie Ra, * Terry, Grand Jury, Padishah, Lim- . bohm, Lowcnberg, Tout le Monde, $. TROTTING NOTES

Canterbury Park Meeting The field nominated lor the Canterbury Handicap on the first day of the Canterbury Park Trotting Club's meeting is the same as is accepted for in the Ashburton Cup, 11 horses figuring in each-race. A win in the Ashburton race will mean a penalty of 12 yards, and here appears a rare opportunity for a good horse in form to win a double. Roi l'Or is set to give away 72 yards in each race, a big task for even the champion pacer he has proved himself. From 60 yards behind he won the Ashburton Cup 12 months ago, and he defeated the others in a manner that suggested another 12 yards would not have made much difference. Whether he is such a great pacer now is a question to be decided, and Ashburton on Boxing Day will provide the proof.' Blue Mountain is at home on any kind of track, and he is better now than when Roi l'Or conceded him 48 yards and a beating in the Ashburton Cup last year. New Derby has disappointed in his efforts in New Zealand, but an improvement may be looked for at any time. If he starts, Free Holmes is not likely to be available to drive Roi l'Or The big grass track should suit Willow Wave, whose barrier manners on occasions have prevented him from entering the list of New Zealand's very best pacers. He is a stayer above the average, and a wet track will be all in his favour. War Buoy's best performance for some time was his third in the New Zealand Cup, but his displays have not filled backers with confidence. A brilliant pacer in his younger days, War Buoy is not likely to improve a great deal. Sir Guy is getting on in years, but if Graham Direct starts he will carry solid support. The best Evicus has done in New Zealand was to run second to Roi l'Or in last year's Ashburton Cup, but, altogether, she is not one in which much confidence can be placed. The Cloudy Range-Tempest bracket will provide the big problem for owners of other horses. Tempest is a brilliant sprinter, and with a race run to suit him he can go a good tv/o miles, and Cloudy Range has proved genuine over all distances when track conditions have suited him. Rollo is getting to the sere and yellow stage, but a wet track will find him in his element. For both the Ashburton Cup and Canterbury Handicap the early favourites arc Cloudy Range, Blue Mountain, and Willow Wave. A Prospect Ganton, trained by R. W. Franks, is a really good stayer, and thus early his chance's in the Stewards' Handicap at Canterbury Park make a direct appeal. In the Whiteleigh Handicap, of two miles, at last month's* meeting at Addingtcn Ganton defeated a big field in 4min 30sec, and now, handicapped on 4min 41sec in a small field, he must be seriously considered. Ganton gave away 43 yards in a 4min 49sec class, and is now asked to concede 33 yards start. Most danger may be expected from Amonos, who is now 24 yards better treated than Ganton than he was when the pair last met. Trisco Lady The Islington Handicap, of a mile and a quarter, premises to provide one of the best races on the Canterbury Park programme. Included in the field are Casanova. Frisco Lady,. Gallant Knight, and Pot Luck, and svhile all are brilliant pacers Frisco Lady appears to have the best prospects of success. Her ridiculously easy win in the Sprinters" Handicap at Addington last month will not soon be forgotten by investors, as the field included several she will meet on this occasion. She won easily in 3min 14 4-ssec, one cf the best performances over a mile and a half ever registered at Addingtcn. The Auckland Cup Red Shadow is well on his way to Auckland, in, charge of his trainer, J. Eryce. The chestnut has done well since his creditable second to Indianapolis in the New Zealand Cup, and his connexions are confident of victory. Plis trainer, J. Bryce. has already driven Ahuriri, Man o' War, and Cathedral Chimes to win the big race, while his son, Andrew, drove Gold Jacket twice and Man o' War once. The last two Auckland Cups were won by Free Holmes with Roi l'Or and Graham Direct. Great Northern Derby Last year R. B. Berry won the Great Northern Derby with Valdor, and if he elects to take Parisienne north for this month's race he should complete the double victory. Parisienne's mission, however, is the Champion Stakes at Ashburton on Boxing day, and her racing there will decide her programme for the following few days. Southland Jottings Our Southland correspondent writes as follows: Southland tracks are in excellent order for holiday racing at Christmas and New Year. In some, instances they were becomnig too firm and this week's rain has freshened them considerably.) The Gore course has never been in bet-1 ter order. Ruru, a brother to a good trotter in Leeway, promises to race more encour-1 agingly this season. He was pacing

very soundly on the Winton tracks before the Wairib Troiting Club's nontotalisator meeting, and his success at that fixture was not unexpected. Incidently it was the first occasion that the colours of Messrs R. and C. Roltcn had been carried to victory since Marvin Dillon, a half-sister to Ruru, won a race at Winton some seasons back. In view of the success of Southern Smile on northern tracks more than ordinary interest will be displayed in the progress of a sister in the stable of W. Cosgrove at Winton. She is a four-year-old and was given easy tasks last season, and then turned out owing to her showing signs of lameness. She now "appears quite sound and good things are expected of this Adioo Guy—Regina Logan novice. Interest will be displayed in the progress of a promising three-year-old filly recently sent by a Winton breeder to P. Gallagher, to be prepared at Washdyke. She is by Adioo Guy from Logan's Mission and is a sister to Grand Mogul. A tempting offer for this youngster has been refused. A novice attracting attention as a member of A. J. Scott's team at Gore is Jesse Owens. He is a well-grown four-year-old gelding by Adioo Guy from Eiffel Tower. Winner of the Croydon Handicap at Gore last Boxing Day, Annie Moko is doing well for the Lumsden trainer, A. L. Budge. In this year's race she is conceding 48yds to a number of those whom she defeated. The task is probably beyond the Peter Moko mare, ior although a solid trotter she is not brilliant. J. M. Maconnel will produce Desert Cloud in forward condition for Christmas racing. He will race over a mil? and a" quarter at Gore, and will find the opposition strong. He may be s.\n to advantage after Boxing Day, over extended distances, as he has given every indication that he will stay well over .two miles. Dora Lindsay is the name chosen for a three-year-old filly by Wellington Direct from Celeste, in commission at Gore. Celeste is by Sungod frcm Red Empress, a Rothschild mare. Excellent fields have accepted for the Gore Trotting Club's annual fixture on Boxing Day. Although the total entries rnyeal a slight decreaso en lact year the fields were well balanced. There were no omissions from the principal event, the Gore Trotting Cup Handicap, there being 13 acceptors, compared with a field of 19 last year. Two. Double Great and Sergeant Dallas, dropped out of the sprint race, and and Vologda failed to accept for the E. A. Pigeon Memorial Handicap.
