OBSERVATION FLIGHT ENDS IN CRASH

AEROPLANE FOUND ON HILL NEAR MELBOURNE

(Received December 16, 12.15 a.m.) MELBOURNE, December 15. Searching aeroplanes found Pilot Officer E. V. Read's aeroplane, which was not reported after he had left to make weather observations. It had crashed in bush on Mount Wallace, about 50 miles from Melbourne in the direction of Ballarat. Read appeared to be trapped in the cockpit. He was seen waving to the searchers. A land party expects to reach him to-night. A later message says Read has been found by a party of farmers. Both his legs were broken, his nose fractured and all his teeth smashed. He also has severe facial injuries. He was trapped in the cockpit for 31 hours and suffered severely from thirst and mosquitoes. His condition is critical.
