SCHOOL PRIZES

(CONTINUED FROM PAGE 5)

RANGI-RURU

ADDRESS BY CAPTAIN R. G ENGLAND

An uneventful year was reported by Miss H. F. Gibson, headmistress of the; Rangi-ruru Private School for Girls, at the annual breaking-up and prize-giving ceremony yesterday. The school had been full and there had been good ' attendances. Apart from a mild outbreak of chicken-pox in the first term and some cases of mumps in the i third term, the health of the girls had been exceptionally good. The most importa: ' event of the year had been the opening of the swimming baths. Already good results had been obtained in life-saving. Twenty-two elementary certificates. 25 intermediate certificates. 27 medallions, nine instructor's cer- I tifieates, and two awards of merit had j been gained. The performance of Janet Cooke in gaining an award of merit had been praised particularly by the examiners. Rangi-ruru girls had won all the senior events in the Canterbury Junior Tennis Association's tournament for secondary schools, and the A, B, and C shields in the inter-school tournaments. Several of those who passed the university entrance examination last year had returned to school for the extra year or two which Miss Gibson considered so important in widening their outlook after the cramping preparation for the examination itself. One teacher, Miss Smith, was leaving to take up work under the Education Department, and Miss Johnston was taking a year's leave of absence after 10 years' continuous service. In conclusion, Miss Gibson thanked the teachers and prefects for their loyal cooperation. After Mrs England, an old girl of the school, had presented the prizes, Captain R. G. England (who was associated with Captain Scott, of Antarctic fame) addressed the school. He had been much impressed, he said, with the happy, vigorous appearance of the children of New Zealand and with the evident look of l character in their faces. The girls present, he said, were commencing the voyage of exploration from youth to age. The charts of the old would be of no use to them except to help them to recognise a I rock when they met one. The beginning of life was always romantic, and there was I no reason why life should not remain so. It would if they kept a pride of the right sort in their job, their talents, and their health. It was essential, however, that they keep their balance. This was the job of living. There was no need to run about looking for others to help, he said. They would find plenty needing their help close at hand and alongside the path where their own work led them. They must learn both to give and take. It was not everyone who could take in the proper spirit, but until they could do so they were not qualified to give. Happiness, said Captain England, consisted in finding a purpose, thinking of others, and leading a balanced life. Rangi-ruru School was known all over the world, he said, and he hoped they would all try to keep its reputation unsullied. The prize-list was as follows: Form VI.
