TURF GOSSIP Track Work at Kiccarton Conditions were ideal for training operations at Kiccarton yesterday, and there were, some interesting gallops, especially by horses booked to leave for Auckland to-morrow evening. These all worked the reverse way on the plough. Impersonator, under a strong pull, sprinted three furlongs in 39 3-ssec, and Bun Fight ran five furlongs in Imm 4 4-ssec. Sound Work Trench Fight and Day Dress covered seven furlongs in Imin 30 3-ssec, the first three furlongs in 38 l-ssec. Trench Fight, who is a hard puller, actually galloped over nine furlongs, as he broke away at a fast pace as soon as he went on the track, and so covered more than two furlongs before reaching tfie winning post, from which he and Day Dress were timed. He went very well, completing his task full of running, while Day Dress impressed by her effort, which suggested bright prospects for her on the North Island trip. Studley Royal galloped six furlongs in Imin 18 2-ssec, tne second three in 40sec. Present intentions are to send him to Ellerslie, and should he start in the Great Northern Derby, he will be ridden by A. E. Ellis. An Improved Pair Gustos and Cerne Abbas were companions in a useful gallop over seven furlongs taking Imin 30 l-ssec, the first three in 38sec, four in 50 3-ssec, and six in Imin 16 3-ssec. They kept together throughout, and both gave very satisfactory displays. Left-handed Way Thermidor covered six furlongs in Imin 18sec, the first three in 37 4-5 sec, and Paper Slipper and Top-Notch ■galloped seven furlongs comfortably in Imin 33 l-ssec. A Smart Effort Royal Chief and Lazybones attracted attention by reeling off five furlongs in Imin 2 l-ssec, the first two in 24 3- Royal Chief appeared to be going better over the final stages than Lazybones, who certainly lives up to his name as a track worker. Maroha and Rotokino covered half a mile in 50sec. Both should earn distinction on the West Coast circuit. Palmyra and Gresham ran six furlongs in Imin 19sec, the first three in 3Ssec. Nightbound and Rousseau were together at the end of half a toils in 51sec, and Knockfin occupied 52sec over the same ground. Willie Win and Orange Bud covered six furlongs in Imin 17 3-ssec, finishing abreast. On No. 6 Grass Emissary sprinted three furlongs in S7sec, and Screamer followed in 36 4- while Convivial ran home three in 38 2-ssec. Yale and Mercenary recorded 50 2- for half a mile, the latter, by Paper Money from Egotism, having a slight advantage at the end. Joyous was given a strong nine furlong task, taking 2min Isec, La France joining in at six furlongs, the last three being covered in 40 l-ssec. This pair are likely to race at the Wairarapa New Year meeting, and remain in the north for the Wellington gathering. • Swordstick was slightly in front of Polydora at the end of seven furlongs in Imin 30sec, the last three in 33 4-ssec. Swordstick was nominated for the Westland meeting, but will probably go south with Polydora and Rousseau. Glenavon and Kairangi ran five furlongs in Imin 4sec. The latter, by Dolomite from Miss Bradbury, shows a lot of promise. This pair will go to the West "Coast, but their stablemate Manetho will not make the trip, and he and Sunnyland will have an easy time over the holiday period. Forum and the young Mullaboden— Rachel gelding in A. S. Ellis’s stable ran half a mile in 51sec. Gaysome ran six furlongs smartly in Imin 15sec, the first three in 33 3- She should pay her way on the southern circuit. On Course Proper Ponty and Argentic were companions over nine furlongs the reverse way. the last mils taking Imin 44 3-ssec. the first half in 51sec, six furlongs in Imin 18 3-ssec, and seven furlongs Imin 32 l-ssec. Argentic finished in front, but they were not sent out for a serious trial. W. Broughton is available to ride Ponty in the Auckland Cup. There is, however, a possibility that he will start in his mile engagement on the first day in preference to the cup. and should this arrangement be decided on, Broughton will be offered the ride on Argentic. A Serviceable Task Vintage and Tunneller covered a mile the left-handed way in Imin 44sec, the first three in 37 l-ssec and

the half-mile in 50 l-ssec, the latter going the better at the finish. Jottings Roaming will be ridden at Ellerslie on Boxing Day by W. Broughton, and Lofty by J. Mclnally. Cyclonic has been nominated for the high-weight events at the Waikouaiti and Oamaru meetings, and will be ridden by R. Beale. A. Hclmes has added an upstanding five-year-old gelding by Paladin to his team. He is a real type of jumper, and showed his aptitude by jumping two of the pony hurles yesterday with his trainer in the saddle. Synagogue, who dead-heated with Heros in the Caulfield Futurity Stakes last year, has now struck good form in India. Recently he won a sevenfurlong race of 1000 sovs in lmin 2Gsec. Mr J. A. Phillips, the former owner of Synagogue, is on his way to India, and probably will see Synagogue race at Bombay and Calcutta. A Taranaki writer states that the New Zealand Cup winner, Fersen, who is working well at New Plymouth, is an extremly doubtful starter in the Auckland. Cup. It is probable Fersen will be kept for racing on the Taranaki holiday circuit. Reminders Nominations for the Southland Racing Club's summer meeting will close at 5 p.m. to-day with the secretary at Invercargill. , Nominations for the Greymouth Jockey Club's summer meeting will close at 9 p.m. on Saturday. Nominations for the Reefton Jockey Club's summer meeting will close at 9 p.m. on Saturday. Acceptances for the Waiau Racing Club's meeting will close at 9 p.m. to-day. Acceptances and final payments for the Auckland Racing Club's meeting will close at 5 p.m. on Friday. Making Own Rules The following comment on Cherry King, owned by the former Christchurch resident Mr M. Shaw, and now trained for him at Randwick by P. Riddle, appeared in a Sydney paper:— The running of the Ascot Handicap confirmed a fairly general opinion that Cherry King has a will to oppose the riding efforts of vigorous jockeys, and that unless he is in the mood, nothing can make him stretch out at his top. On the strength of a good effort at Warwick Farm, Cherry King was favourite for the race. He jumped off smartly, and D. Munro had him in third place after a furlong. Munro wisely wanted to drop Cherry King in behind the leaders, to save ground. Immediately he made the move, Cherry King objected, and from that point lost ground. Munro, along the back of the course, had hard work to make his mount keep within reasonable distance of the leaders, but his efforts were of little avail against the stubbornness of his mount. At the three furlongs. Cherry King was under heavy punishment, but, although he finished fourth, it was a poor display.

TROTTING NOTES

Reminders Acceptances for the Gore Trotting Club's meeting, to be held on Boxing Day, will close to-day. Acceptances for the Ashburton and Westport meetings will close tomorrow. Nominations for the Canterbury Park Trotting Club's summer meeting will close to-morrow. An American Trotter Airflow, who has been off the scene for some time, is due to make her next appearance at Ashburton on Boxing Day. At her best the American-bred mare is a brilliant trotter and not gifted with exceptional stamina. She should find a mile and a half journey to her liking. Favours Grass Tracks Casanova always does his best racing on grass tracks. He is reported to be in excellent order. De Soto De Soto claims no engagements during the Christmas and New Year holidays. The lameness that affected him at Addington is apparently more serious than was at first thought. The Favourites Cloudy Range and Blue Mountain are the ruling favourites for the Ashburton Cup. A Prospect Labourman is a pacer of promise and trained at Methven. He will be started in the Wakanui Handicap at Ashburton. On Parade When driven by his trainer, L. Davidson, at the recent New Brighton meeting, On Parade did not live up to the high opinions of his many admirers and apparently the Travis Axworthy horse was not quite ready for a stern tussle. He is better than that form suggested, and at Ashburton on Boxing Day he may do much better. The mile track of good firm going gives every horse a chance and On Parade is one pacer that races best on top of the ground. Corrected Handicaps The Midsummer Handicap at the Ashburton Trotting Club's Boxing Day meeting, for which the handicaps were declared on a basis of 4min 42sec, is a 4min 44sec class. The new handicaps are as follows: Cadiz .. scr Wild Dreams .. scr Boris Derby .. scr Real Huon .. 12 Full Hand .. scr Garner (T.) .. 24 Lucky Jack .. scr Kibo .. 48 Play On .. scr On Parade .. 60 Raider .. scr Casanova .. 72 Sea Trail .. scr Happy Knight 84 U. Scott .. scr In the original list Happy Knight was set to give away 60 yards, and he would have had his work cut out to concede this much ground to U. Scott. At a difference of 84 yards the Southland-bred pacer has a big task ahead of him.
