LORNEVILLE

(I'RISS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) INVERCARGILL, December 15. Yardings of all classes of stock were heavy at Lorneville to-day, with a consequent easing in values for fat sheep and cattle. Fat pigs and store sheep sold briskly, but interest waned noticeably in the fat sheep sale, and ewes were about 2s a head cheaper all through, and wethers about Is 6d a head below the values of the last sale a fortnight ago. It was an erratic market, and passings were frequent towards the end of the sale. The beef yarding was big for local requirements. There was practically no representation of country butchers, and competition was not keen. Values for good quality cattle eased by at least £1 a head, and the drop was bigger for medium and poorer quality cattle. The entry was good, fats holding their value and stores easing slightly. Values were:—Fat sheep, prime quality, shorn wethers sold at from 27s to 295. good quality from 25s 3d to 265, and light-weights from 24s to 24s 9d, prime woolly ewes brought up to 255, fair quality from 20s to 225. and lighter down to 15s, good quality shorn ewes brought from 17s to 19s, medium from 15s to 16s. and unfinished from 13s to 14s; fat heavy lambs brought from 28s to 30s, prime quality from 26s to 275, medium from 24s 6d to 25s 6d, and light-weights down to 225; fat cattle, extra prime heavy bullocks brought up to £l3 7s 6d, prime quality from £lO 10s to £ll 15s, good quality from £9 10s to £lO ss, medium from £8 10s to £9, and lighter weights down to £7 10s; prime heavy cows sold at up to £B, prime quality from £6 15s to £7 ss, good quality from £5 15s to £6 ss, medium from £4 15s to £5 ss, and inferior from £3 to £3 15s. CANTERBURY MARKETS

TRADING REMAINS QUIET

~ (BY OCR COMMERCIAL KDITJB ) Tuesday Evening. There is at present very little interest in the grain and produce markets, and dealings are, as usual at this lime of the year, reduced to the minimum. Wheat is practically the only line to which any attention is bems paid, and the price is very firm. There appears to be a pause in the steady increase, as quotations have remained ft 5s f.o.b. lor graded wheat for 10 days, after a period of persistent rising. . , Crops without exception are looking excellent. The drying weather of the last week has been exactly what was needed. Some wheat is showing signs of changing colour, and all trace cf the mildew reported earlier in the season has disappeared. The new potato crops are well forward and are looking splendid. Peas also are promising very well. Some rust was recently reported in Plains cocksfoot crops, but the nor'-west weather recently should overcome this. Quotations The following are the prices quoted to farmers, on trucks, at country sidings, unless otherwise indicated:— Wheat—Milling grade, Tuscan 4s 9ad, Hunters 4s Hid, Pearl 5s l£d, good whole fowl wheat, prompt, to 5s f.0.b.: under grade, to 4s lid, f.o.b. Oats—A Gartens to 3s 2d, B Gartons 3s, Algerians to 2s 6d, Duns 3s 6d. Ryegrass—Perennial 2s 3d; Italian to Is 9d. Cocksfoot—Plains 6d to 7d, Akaroa 7d to 8d per lb. Cowgrass—6d per lb. White Clover—7d to 9d per lb. Chaff—£2 15s a ton. Barley—Feed 2s 3d to 2s 4d a bushel. 6d to ss. Bran—Large £4 15s, small £5 ss. Pollard—Large £5 15s a ton, small £6 ss.

AUCKLAND

ITHE PRESS Special Service.) AUCKLAND, December 15. New potatoes are very plentiful and merchants are quoting 3s to 3s 6d a sugar-bag. The market is still supplied with Canadian onions, which sell readily at 27s 6d per 1001b. Pollard is still in short supply and merchants have raised the price of Australian to £9 7s 6d a ton, which makes very dear feeding. The charges for local mill pollard are considerably less at £6 10s ex mill and £7 5s through stores, but supplies are not nearly .sufficient. Bran is in ample supply and is unchanged at £6 15s a ton. The market for oats in the south is very firm and the local price has been advanced to 4s 9d a bushel. Chaff is steady at the recent advance, which has brought the rate to £8 12s 6d a ton. Fow' wheat has advanced another Id a bushel to 6s 9d and enjoys a steady market. Maize is scarcely a competitor, as the price now asked, 7s 7d a bushel, is the highest that has ruled for many years and is prohibitive to consumers except for special purposes. The drought in Australia is restricting supplies of cereals from that source and feed barley is in short supply. Local quotations are 3d a bushel higher at 5s 3d a bushel for clipped. '
