WORLD AUTHORITY ON HOT SPRINGS
DR. A. L. DAY ARRIVES IN NEW ZEALAND
[THE PRESS Special Service.] AUCKLAND, Decembev 15. The director of the geophysical laboratory of the Carnegie Institute at Washington, Dr. A. L. Day, arrived at Auckland by the Awatea. For many years he has made a study of the hot springs at Yellowstone Park, and the purpose of his visit to New Zealand is to study the hot springs in the Rotorua district. Dr. Day is recognised as the world's greatest authority on hot springs and geysers. He intends to spend some time in New Zealand, and in addition to covering the thermal district he will visit White Island to obtain samples of the gases given out from the various vents on that island. It was Dr. Day who brought about the successful casting of the 200inch telescope mirror which is to be mounted in the Mount Wilson Observatory, California. The mould for this giant casting contained 20 tons of borosilicate glass, and was the result of years of "experimenting by Dr. Day. He is going on to Wellington, where arrangements have been made by the Wellington Philosophical Society for him to give a public lecture. He is accompanied by Mrs Day.
