HOSPITAL BOARD

* MEETING AT ASHBURTON LITTLE INTEREST IN DISTRICT NURSE PROPOSAL The Ashburton Hospital Board met yesterday morning. There were present Messrs W. G. Gallagher (chairman), W. Bryant, C, A. Campion, R. Oakley, F. Frampton, and Dr. J. Russell Wells. The report of the medical superintendent (Dr. A. J. Mason) said that 81 patients remained in hospital at the end of October and 85 were admitted in November. Eighty-two patients were discharged, leaving 84 in the institution. There were 216 out-patient treatments, 79 X-Ray examinations, 198 massage treatments, three plaster, and 55 surgical operations. The Malvern Home report said that 12 patients were admitted, eight discharged. and six remained for November. Thirty-six ante-natal patients were seen for the month. The report of the matron (Miss E. J. Watt) said that Sister Dearsley returned for duty on December 1. Nurses Cradock and Taylor left on November 14 and December 4 respectively for maternity training. Nurses Hinton and Cassidy would leave at the end of December. Misses Allchurch, Bilbrough, Brittenden, Mayo, Salkeld, and _ Whiteside began preliminary training on December 7. Nurses Lemon, Pavelka, and Silverwood were absent on annual leave, and Nurses Brown and Dutton had returned from annual leave. For the relief committee, Mr Bryant reported that £6O 3s Id had been distributed during the month. The Hospital Boards’ Association forwarded remits for the. Dominion conference of the Association at Timaru in March. The board decided to purchase a new flag. The chairman said that the flag had been bought 20 years ago, during the war, by sixpenny subscriptions from the hospital patients. Mr Oakley reported that very little interest was being taken in the proposal for a district nurse at Mayfield. Thg tender of A. J, Donn was accepted for painting the hospital, and it was decided to call tenders for a new steam steriliser. The chairman extended seasonal greetings to the board and staff, and Mr Bryant reciprocated for the board members.
