FIRE IN GOODS SHED

LITTLE DAMAGE DONE OUTBREAK AT GREYMOUTH QUICKLY SUPPRESSED Three bales of canvas tent material caught fire in the Greymouth railway goods shed about 8.45 p.m. on Sunday, but before the fire had gained a hold the alarm was given, and the outbreak quickly suppressed by the Greymouth fire brigade. The cause of the fire, which originated in a small box on top of the bales, is unknown. The alarm was given by Mr J. Walton, a Harbour Board employee. It is fortunate that the alarm was given when it was, as there were within a few feet of the blaze several drums of oil and petrol, besides a large amount of goods and merchandise, which were stored in the sheds. OBITUARY MR HENRY JAMES HUDD Mr Henry James Hudd, aged 68 years, died early yesterday morning at his residence, South Beach, after having been in ill health for some time. Mr Hudd, who was a native of Westport, had resided at South Beach for the last 31 years. For many years he conducted a shipping and commission agent business m Greymouth. Mr Hudd was one of the oldest members of the Star of the West Druids’ Lodge. He is survived by his wife, four daughters, Miss Ellen Hudd (Wellington). Sister Mary St. Henry and Sister Josephine (of the Mission Convent, Christchurch), and Miss Cecily Hudd (Greymouth),. one. . brother, George (Greymouth), and two sisters, Mesdames Egden (Christchurch) and Chapman (Invercargill). The funeral will leave St. Patrick’s Church at 9.30 o’clock this morning. MR F. ROLLERSON The death occurred on Sunday morning of Mr Frank Rollerson, who was a well-known boardinghouse proprietor and a resident of the Inangahua district for almost 30 years. Mr Rollerson was 55 years of age. and, was a native of Australia. He had worked in several quartz mines. He was a keen supporter of the Labour movement and was actively associated with the management of the Inangahua Miners’ Union. He is survived by his widow and a family of four, two sons and two daughters. There are four sisters in Auckland. YACHTING AT GREYMOUTH SWEEPSTAKE AND FINAL OF HAINES CUP There were 11 entries in a sweepstake race held by the Greymouth Regatta Club on Sunday, the winner being Awatea, sailed by F. Brennan, off the 7min mark. In the sail-off for the Haines Cup, Marion, sailed by R. Trewern, with a start of Bmin, beat Vagabond (Dean) by 4min 30sec; Mystic (C. Brown), off scratch, was second in the sweepstake, and Pop Eye (Hogarth), oft 15min, was third. GREYMOUTH RINK WINS REYNOLDS BADGES BOWLING MATCH AGAINST RUNANGA The Greymouth and Runanga Bowling Clubs recently played an eightrinks match at Runanga and Greymouth for the Reynolds badges, which were held by Runanga. Sharp’s rink (Brown, Laing, Phillips, and Sharp), who won by the greatest margin, won the badges. Runanga was beaten by 166 points to 128 points. The following were the results, with the Runanga skips mentioned first:— Unwin 20, Southward 18; Speakman 17, Strongman 22; Warburton 20, Hadcroft 18; Pope 11. Sharp 28; Taylor 14, Tabb 25; Ferguson 18, Truscott 21; Syme 20 Whibley 15; Massey 8, Moss 19. GREYMOUTH ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY CONCERT AT REGENT THEATRE The progress which the Greymouth Orchestral Society has made was demonstrated in the high standard of the concert given by the society in the Regent Theatre. Greymouth, on Sunday night. Mr S. A. N. Sullivan was the conductor. The programme was; —March, Tne Cavalier” (Hall), the orchestra; overture, “The Jolly Robbers” (Suppe), the orchestra; selection from “II Trovatore” (Verdi), the orchestra; song, “Down in the Forest,” Miss Alice Radcliffe; “Hungarian Dance, No. 5” (Brahms), the orchestra; selection from “Maritana” (Wallace), the orchestra; song, “The Lost Chord,” Mr John Hadland; “Glenwood March,” the orchestra. Miss Moira McSherry was accompanist. GREYMOUTH SPORTS AND CYCLE CLUB RACE AT TEREMAKAU BRIDGE The Greymouth Sports and Cycle Club held a race from Karoro to the Teremakau bridge on Sunday. Fastest time was gained by M. Jones, who was also first. The results were as follows: —M. Jones (3mln 30sec) 1, J. Taylor (3min 30sec) 2, M. Malone (3min 30sec) 3. Jones won by a length, and there were three lengths between second and third. Other starters were P. Duffy (scr), D. Morland (30sec), D. Clark (Imin lOsec), and A. Bennett (4min). TENNIS REEFTON BEATS CRONADUN On, the Reefton Tennis Club’s courts pn Sunday the Reefton Club played a I match against members of the Crona- ’ dun Club. The home team won with a score of J5 sets to 9. seta.
