IDEAL HOLIDAY WEATHER

KING’S BIRTHDAY IN RANGIORA With ideal summer weather for the King’s birthday holiday yesterday, many residents of Rangiora spent the day picnicking at nearby resorts. A large number of parties enjoyed the day at Waikuku beach and picnic spots on the banks of the Ashley river were also popular. As the holiday was cleared at such Short notice, there were no organised sports fixtures, but there was a good attendance of players at the Rangiora Bowling Club’s green and at the various tennis courts in the town. The streets were deserted throughout the day except in the early afternoon, when a number of people gathered to hear the proclamation of the King read at the Borough Council chambers. Tennis In a challenge match for fifth place on the North Canterbury Lawn Tennis Sub-Association’s men’s ladder, W. Wade beat F. Coe (challenger) by 6-2, 6-2. Both are members of the Amberley club. An inter-club match between the Rangiora and Christchurch Catholic Cathedral Clubs, at Rangiora on Sunday, resulted in a win for Cathedral by 17 matches to 14. Festivity Week Committee Further entries for the children’s fancy dress and pets’ parades during Festivity Week, in Rangiora, were received at a meeting of the committee yesterday morning. The Mayor (Mr C. W. Tyler) presided. Entries for the fancy dress parade now total 216, and those for the nets’ parade have reached the total of 110. The Kaiapoi Woollen Company was thanked for its gift of a rug as a prize for the businessmen’s singing contest. “Messiah” Presented Under the direction of Mr H. L, Spark, the Malvern Musical Society presented Handel’s “Messiah,” in the John Knox Presbyterian Church, Rangiora, after the evening service on Sunday. The work was capably produced and solos and chorus passages were both enjoyed by the congregation which filled the church. The soloists were Misses E. Rennie (soprano) N. Lowe (contralto), Messrs E. Rodgers (tenor), and J. L. Tennent (bass). Mrs Spark was the organist and Miss D. Robinson the pianist. Regent Theatre “Dr. Socrates,” a thrilling and dramatic romance of a medical practitionei in his fight for humanity, will be presented this afternoon and events at the Regent Theatre, Rangiora. SMOKE CONCERT AT ROLLESTON

The Springs-Ellesmere and surroundings districts Returned Soldiers’ Association held its annual smoke concert, when there was a large number of returned soldiers from the surrounding districts present. Mr C. Howell presided. The toast list was as follows: “The King”; “Fallen Comrades,” proposed by the president, Mr C. Howell; “Returned Soldiers’ Association and Other Associations,” proposed by Mr P. Fitzgibbon and responded to by Mr B. O. Priddis, Mr E. F. Willcox, and Mr V. Davis; “Nursing Sisters in the Great War,” proposed by Professor E. R. Hudson; “New Zealand Permanent Staff,” proposed by Colonel J. Murphy, responded to by Sergeant-Major Johnston; “Local Bodies,” proposed by Mr E. Coleman, responded to by Mr A. McLachlan; “The Ladies,” “The Visitors,” and “The Performers.” Humorous recitations were given by Messrs C. Mills and J. Lawerance, pipe solo by Mr J. Cambell, songs by Messrs G. Cambell, C. James, and A. McLachlan. Community singing was led by Colonel Murphy and Mr P. Fitzgibbon. The pianist was Mr Reg, Woods, KAIKOURA MEN’S HOCKEY CLUB’S DANCE A dance and social were held on Friday evening in the Kaikoura Band Room, organised by the Men’s Hockey Club as a wind-up for the year, and also in honour of Mr I. Gill, a member of the club, who is to tie married soon. Mr C. Stewart, captain of the West End team, was presented with the Tawihi Cup, given by Mr I. Gill for most points scored in the local hockey tournament. Mr F. Taylor, captain of the club, presented Mr Gill with a case of cutlery and wished him all happiness for the future. He also expressed thanks to Mr Gill for his generous gift to the club. Mr Gill thanked the members of the club for the most enjoyable evening given in his honour, and for their gift. Mr W. D. Sabiston’s orchestra played the music. Mr F. Taylor was master of ceremonies. Bowls There was a good crowd on the Kaikoura bowling green on Saturday afternoon and many exciting games were played. KAIAPOI BOWLING CLUB A progressive doubles tournament was played on the Kaiapoi Working Men’s Club green yesterday afternoon, and resulted in a tie between H. Hemingway, J. Taplin (s)., and R. Bartley, I. W. Karaitiana (s.), with three games each. The play-off was won by Hem'neway and Tnnlin King’s Birthday Holiday A public holiday was observed in Kaiapoi yesterday in honour of the King’s birthday. WEEDONS SUNDAY SCHOOL ANNIVERSARY

The Weedons Methodist Sunday school held its anniversary services recently. Special singing was given by the children and choir. The morning service was conducted by the Rev. C. H. Kendon. Scripture readings were taken by Ngaire Willets and Gordon Allison. A duet was sung by Marjorie Right and Dorreen Allison, and a solo by Mrs A. J. Chambers. The evening service was conducted by the Rev. M. A. Rugby Pratt. Scripture readings were taken by Elsie Schaffer and James Curragh. Solos were sung by Rhona Hudson and Douglas Willets The anniversary tea and concert were held, with the Rev. C. H. Kendon presiding. Mr L. Chambers presented the annual report, which indicated that the Sunday school was working satisfactorily, and with a good credit balance. The prizes were presented as follows:—lntermediate class: Gordon Allison 1, Trevor Chambers 2, Douglas Willets 3; additional: Lester Allison, Annie Curragh, Agnes Curragh, Rhona Hudson, James Dallard, and Elsie Schaffer (equal), Yvonne Schaffer.
