VANDALS IN THE PARKS

* honorary rangers SUGGESTED Acts of vandalism on public reserves were reported by Mr E. H. Andrews at a meeting of the Beautifying Association held last evening. Trees had been destroyed, noweis stolen, and buildings defaced, said Mi Andrews. The City Council had appealed for honorary rangers to patrol the reserves and had offered them written authority. A ranger was acting at Beckenham Park, but was finding the work too much for one man. Mr Andrews suggested that the association issue an appeal to the public for more rangers. Mr R. B. Owen said that a quiet talk would do more than a big stick. He himself preferred to approach the vandals kindly and reason with them. He had found, after 20 years’ experience, that such treatment was the most effective. He did not want to act as a policeman. It was decided that an appeal for rangers be made and that members of the association should endeavour to get rangers for the parks in their own districts. _________________
