STOCK MARKETS

♦ RANGIORA There was a particularly strong demand , for pigs at the weekly stock market in Rangiora yesterday. Sheep also met with a good sale. Yardings of both classes of stock were fair. Cattle sold poorly, most of the few animals offered being passed in. Fat wether hoggets in wool made from 33s 4d to 34s 4d, and shorn lines 235. Fat wethers in wool realised from 29s 6d to 33s 6d. Wether hoggets in wool made 22s 6d, and shorn wether hoggets from 20s to 21s 3d. Ewes and lambs in wool brought from 17s 3d to 18s 3d. TEMUKA The feature of the fortnightly stock sale held in Temuka yesterday was the entry of 1200 fat lambs—the first to be offered in South Canterbury this season. The sale for these was a remarkable one and in nearly every case sellers’ expectations were exceeded by more than 2s 6d a head. Prime quality lambs made from 27s to 31s Id, and medium quality from 24s to 265. In the fat sheep section there was a fair entry, and most pens met with a keen demand The sale was up 2s a head on last week’s entry. Extra heavy woolly wethers sold at up to 35s lOd and heavy woolly wethers to 33s Id. Best shorn ewes ranged up to 24s lOd and shorn wethers, best quality, were firm at 24s Id. There was a small yarding of store sheep, one pen of cull ewes and lambs selling at 14s and another of two-tooth ewes at 13s 3d. The sale was a good one in the fat cattle pens, and although the entry was large, good quality beasts sold at fair prices. Prime fat steers made from £lO 5s to £ll 17s 6d, and medium steers from £7 10s to £8 10s. There was a small entry of vealers which brought from 30s to £2 ss, and a pen of runners sold at up to £4 ss. The prices for fat cows were up 10s on the previous sale, but the entry was smaller than usual, good empty cows bringing from £3 12s 6d to £4 2s 6d. ASHBURTON The smallness of the entry of fat sheep at the Ashburton stock sale yesterday resulted in butchers having to compete keenly for what was available. Freezing company representatives also followed t.ie market, but in many cases values were forced up beyond their limits, the butchers taking the bulk of the yarding at a rise in price of 2s a head for both ewes and wethers. In the case of the heavier prime wethers, the appreciation in value was not so great. What there was of the entry was in the main of good quality. Practically all the sheep in the yards were shorn. Heavy prime wethers made from 26s to 33s lOd, and lighter sorts down to 20s 9d. The top price of 33s lOd was obtained by R. A. Jackson (Seafleld) for a p of two. L.
