LINCOLN COLLEGE

MONTHLY MEETING OF BOARD The monthly meeting of the Board of Governors of Canterbury Agricultural College was held yesterday at Lincoln. There were present; Messrs W. O. Rennie (chairman), M. E. Lyons, G. F. Wright, N. M. Orbell, D. Buddo, J. R. D. Johns, and the director (Professor E. R. Hudson). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs H. S. S. Kyle, M.P., A. W. Banks, and Dr. Flight. The director’s report stated that at the Royal Show the College secured the following awards; Beef Shorthorns, one first, second and three thirds; dairy Shorthorns, one first, five seconds; pigs, seven firsts, five seconds, and five thirds; sheep, one first, four seconds, and two thirds. Members expressed satisfaction at the results secured, particularly in the Romney sheep section, where the competition was very keen. Arrangements were in train for the holding of the diploma day on December 15. Invitations wore being forwarded to those who had rendered active support to the academic life of the College. Stud Stock The director reported that support had been promised in connexion with certain breeds of pedigree stock. Mr A. Twaddle, manager of Bushy Park station was allowing the college to forward six Corricdalo ewes for service by the Royal champion rain; Mr J. S. Madcley, Kaiapoi, six ewes to his special Southdown ram; Mr F. L. McGregor, Dunsandel. the offer of a number of ewes to a special Corriedale ram, and Mr R. Low, Molhven. had offered to lease a Border Leicester ram. It was hoped that this lead would be followed by other breeders and by breed societies. It was considered that such support to the College flocks and herds would react to the benefit of_thc breed societies concerned as the College and its stud slock might well function as the “shop window” foisted breeders throughout New Zealann. Members expressed appreciation of the offers, and it was resolved to write to the breeders mentioned, returning thanks. Constitution of Board The constitution of the Board of Governors was raised by a letter from the executive of the Mid-Canterbury Farmers’ Union requesting that representation on the board be given to the Farmers’ Union. There was no representation from the area between the Rakaia and the Rangitata rivers at the present time. In the discussion Ilia! followed it was stated that the constitution of the board was to be considered by tire Government. There was no direct representation of the union provided at present, and if a change were made it would doubtless have to embrace the whole of (lie South Island. The Ex-Students' Association was also moving for representation, ami it was obvious that this organisation also had the interests of (he college at heart. It was at length decided that the Government he asked to consolidate the various acts ami amendments relating to the college, and that a subcommittee. consisting of the chairman, and Messrs Lyons and Kyle, and the director, draft; a proposed constitution for submission to the February meeting of the board. SCHOLARSHIPS AND TROPHIES O ITERS TO LINCOLN COLLEGE The allocation of several scholarships was discussed at yesterday’s mooting oi the Board of Governors of Lincoln College. , The Job Osborne scholarship for the student showing the most aptitude during the year for farm work, and who intends to complete the course, was won by Noel Peryman. The allocation of the Shell scholarship will snortly be announced by the professorial board. The New Zealand Refrigerating Company's scholarship lor a student from Otago had boon referred by the donors to the Young Farmers’ Association there for a selection. It was reported that the committee of the association had made a selection, and that another young farmer who had come very high in the selection would also be attending next year as a student. IT ~ , A letter was received Irom H. Matson and Company, congratulating the college on the great success of the inspection by farmers of various subterranean areas, conducted by the college last Friday. The writers thought it a good idea for the college staff to go outside and meet farmers on their own ground to discuss matters of interest, and as a mark of appreciation they offered a challenge cup for annual competition amongst the students. The donors left the matter of the allocation of the trophy to the college. The Southdown Sheep Society wrote in regard to its donation of a challenge cup and shield for competition amongst the students. The board expressed appreciation ot the offers of scholarships and trophies, and instructed that letters of thanks be forwarded. OLD BOYS’ SCHOLARSHIP The Canterbury Agricultural Colle'*e Old Boys’ Association’s scholarship which entitles the bolder to one year’s training at Lincoln College, and which is eligible to any member of the South Island Young Farmers Clubs, has been won by a South Canterbury, candidate. Mr J. W. T. Anstey. of the Runners-up were Mr J. D. Gregan (Hunter Club) and Mr L. J. Mercer (Dunsandel Club. North Canterbl<Mr AC. Cameron, one of the selection committee, commenting on the selection, said that it was hoped that otherorganisations and individuals might follow the splendid lead given by the Canterbury Agricultural College Old Boys’ Association and give a scholarship for young farmers and give othermen a chance to go to Lincoln. Many entries had been received from Southland, Otago. North, Mid and South Canterbury, and an exhaustive examination had been necessary to select the three finalists. FARM OVERSEER LINCOLN COLLEGE APPOINTMENT From about 50 applications received by Lincoln College for the position of farm overseer, rendered vacant by the resignation of Mr R. A. Fougere, who leaves to-day for Otago to join the staff of the Valuation Department. Mr A K McLay was selected. Mr McLay has liad considerable farm experience in Canterbury., He will take up his new duties sbout the Tniddlo ox tne month.
