ATHLETICS

♦ EVENING HANDICAP MEETING SMALL FIELDS COMPETE Enthusiasm among athletes has seldom run so low as it did at last evening’s handicap meeting on the Park track. A handful of spectators watched a series of poor races, in most of which the field could be counted on the finger of one hand. The evening was one of the finest possible for a really good display of racing, and the meeting provided an excellent opportunity for athletes to show their paces. The poor support given was therefore most disappointing to the few officials who were present. The 75 yards handicap produced the best race, in which W. Bromley (Old Boys) won by half a yard from T. G. Broadway (Canterbury), with R. D. Thompson (Canterbury) a foot away in third place. There was little interest m the other events. E. P. Newburgh (Canterburv) was credited with 26 3-ssec for his win in the 220 yards hurdles from scratch. Detailed Events 75 Yards—First heat: T. G. Broadway (3iyds) 1, W. Bromley (SJyds) 2. C. S, Barrel!
