SOUTH CANTERBURY NEWS

TRIBUTES FROM BAR

MR C. R. ORR WALKER HONOURED REGRET EXPRESSED AT DEPARTURE Mr C. R. Orr Walker, S.M.. who will leave Timaru to-day for Auckland, was met by members of the South Canterbury Law Society at the courthouse yesterday morning, when warm tributes were paid to his ability and the manner in which he had done his duties during his 10 years of residence in Timaru. Mr W. D. Campbell, who presided, *aid that the Justice Department had seen fit to transfer Mr Orr Walker to a larger district, in just recognition of his good work. He had heard speakers referring to the magistrate’s promotion. This was wrong, as all magistrates were equal, and there was no suggestion of one being transferred to ® better position. The speaker said that Mr Orr Walker was going to a district where, because of the larger population, there was more crime. Nevertheless, there Was no question of the problems with which he would be faced being any ®°re difficult than those he had had ® Timaru. Some of the actions dealt with by Mr Orr Walker were worthy of the- best brains in the Dominion, ‘Utd, though the district did not have the criminal cases of other centres, the civil ones called for the highest knowledge of legal affairs. This factor otade it noted as a district for train!T‘g magistrates for larger centres, twery magistrate since 1909, when the speaker turned to law, had gone to a tgger field. Timaru seemed to be a ’faming ground for the final burst belo re retiring from the profession. appointed to Timaru, an action of which he was very proud. In his reply, Mr Orr Walker said it had always been a pleasure to him to work with members of the profession in Timaru. They had always prepared their cases well. He trusted that the present Minister for Justice would be able to speak of his appointment to Auckland as Mr Rolleston had spoken of his appointment to Timaru. He would always retain happy memories of his association with members of the legal profession in Timaru, both inside and outside the court.
