DEPARTURE IN THE DARK
PETROL FOR 2000 MILES (mriTxa pbxss *«socutio*—copmioht.) (Received November 15, 7.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, November 15, The New Zealand aviator, Mr L. E. Clark, left Richmond aerodrome for New Zealand at 3.34 a.m. (Sydney time). It was very dark and cloudy when Mr Clark left. He was given an enthusiastic farewell'by about 150 persons who had been attending a dance at Richmond. Mr Clark took off in a slight cross wind, running between rows of flares. He carried 112 gallons of petrol, giving a cruising range of 2000 miles. He intended to cruise at 110 to 115 miles an hour and expected the flight to occupy 14 or 15 hours. He carried a hacksaw and a tomahawk with which to cut out the engine in the event of being forced down.at sea, but he did not anticipate any danger.
