Mr and Mrs Arthur Elworthy (Holme Station, Timaru), who were in Christchurch for Carnival Week, returned home yesterday afternoon. Mr and Mrs George Macdonald (Lowry Hills, Cheviot), who were the guests of Lady Clifford, Sumner, for race week, returned home yesterday.

Mrs J. Mowbray Tripp (Silverton, Geraldine), who has been spending a few weeks in Christchurch, returned home yesterday. Miss E. Elworthy and her niece, Miss Nancy Bond, who have been in Christchurch for race week, will return to Timaru this morning. Mrs William Deans (Sandown, Darfield), who has been visiting Wellington on business connected with Women’s Institutes, returned to Christchurch on Saturday. Mr and Mrs Percy Hall (The Haldons, Seddon), who have been visiting Mrs J. F. Buchanan, Fendalton, returned home yesterday. Miss Petersen, a visitor from England, who has been spending some time in South Africa, is the guest of Mrs-E. R. Webb, Murray place. Mrs Trevor Clarkson (Geraldine), who has been visiting her mother, Mrs C. G. Curtis, Rossall street, returned home yesterday. Mrs John Marshall, who is visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs E. G. McCullough, Bealey avenue, will leave in March to make her home in Brisbane. Her husband will arrive in Christchurch from England in February, and will spend a few weeks here before leaving for Australia.

Miss Shona Dampier-Crossley (North Canaterbury), who has been visiting her aunt, Mrs Alex Macfarlane, Sumner, returned home yesterday. Miss Cara Mcßae (Waikari), who has been the guest of Mrs W. F. Browne, Latimer square, returned home on Saturday. Miss Lindsay Adams (Langley Dale, Marlborough), who has been staying with Miss Molly Maling, Cashmere Hills, will return home to-day. Miss Sylvia Orbell (Pentlow, Timaru) returned home on Saturday evening after a short visit to Christchurch.

Misses A. Jeffrey (Ranglora) and R. Jeffrey (Christchurch) left on Saturday evening to spend a holiday at Hamilton and Te Puke. Mrs H. D. Acland was hostess on Saturday at a very enjoyable 5 o’clock party, given at her home, Park terrace, as a pleasant ending to Carnival Week. Her guests included many country visitors, who left for their homes during the weekend. •

Mrs A. K. Firth, whose husband’s horse. Royal Chief, won the Pioneer Handicap at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting at Ric<?srton on Saturday, entertained ihany friends after the races at a pleasant 5 o’clock party, given at her home, “Oakbrook,” Circuit street. Mr and Mrs R. T. Tosswiil returned to Christchurch on Saturday after a tour of three weeks in the North Island.

Miss Rachel Mandl (Hokitika) arrived in Christchurch on Saturday for a short visit. She is staying at the United Service Hotel. Mrs Walter Radford arrived in Christchurch from Hokitika last week and has taken up residence at Lismore flats, Fendalton. Mrs W. Woodward (Papanui road) has returned home after visiting the North Island. Mr H. J. D. Mahon, former headmaster of the Auckland Grammar School, Mrs Mahon, aijd Misses L. M. and D. B. Mahon, are passengers on the Akaroa, due to arrive from London at Wellington on December 5, Mr Mahon and his family are returning from a tour of England and the Continent, undertaken shortly after Mr Mahon’s retirement last year.

McGregor (Dunedin) will pass through Christchurch to-day on their way to Wellington to attend the Dominion conference of the League of Mothers, which will be opened on Wednesday by Lady Galway. REPRESENTATIVE GUESTS Lady Hartington,' who, with her husband, the Marquis of Hartmgton, accompanied their Excellencies, Viscount and Viscountess Galway to Christchurch last week, is a member of the central council and of the hospitality committee of the Victoria League, London. KEY. MOTHER LIGOURI (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON, November 14. Thousands of students who havepassed through St. Mary’s Convent, Hill street. Wellington, will regret to learn of the death of the Rev. Mother Liguori, which occurred this afternoon. The Rev. Mother was professed a nun of the Order of the Sisters of Mercy more than 50 years ago, and she had lived in Wellington practically, the whole of that time. She was 'a daughter of the late Salvatore Cimino, who arrived in Wellington in the ship Olympus in 1842, just two years after the foundation of the white settlement on . the shores of Port Nicholson. Mother Liguori was for many veers one oi the best known and most successful teachers of singing in the Dominion. '
