KAIAPOI SCHOOL

OLD PUPILS’ REUNION HELD

The Kaiapoi School Old Scholars’ Association held its annual reunion on Saturday afternoon. As the weather was unsuitable for holding the gathering in the school grounds, as was originally intended, it was held in the old school, Hilton street—now the Borough Hall. About 230 old pupils, from all parts of the province, and some from even further afield, attended, and several scholars who attended the old Church of England Day School, 1862-1874 were also present. Mr P. G. Hunt, president of the association, who welcomed the visitors, said that the number present showed that there was still a keen interest taken in the old school days. The association had been formed as the result of the school jubilee celebrations held last year and the present membership, which was more than 250, included old pupils throughout New Zealand from as far north as Kaitaia, to Winton in the south. He urged the members to assist by enrolling more members so that there would be an increased attendance at next year’s reunion. Afternoon tea was served, during which the old scholars spent a happy time renewing friendships and recounting past experiences. Scout Troop’s Visit The Mokihi boy scout troop, Spreydon, spent an enjoyable afternoop at the Kaiapoi Park on Saturday, when a cricket match against the Kaiapoi troop was played, the match resulting in favour of Spreydon. The teams were afterwards entertained at tea in the scout rooms, Hilton street, and later took part in a debate, the subject being: “That there are no great men to-day.” The Mayor, the Rev. W. H. A. Vickery, acted as chairman.

The judge, the Rev. L. C. Horwood, gave his decision to the Mokihi troop., who took the affirmative, by 154 points to 120. '
