METROPOLITAN DAY

Argentic Has Narrow Win

SUCCESSES FOR TRIUNE AND GREAT STAR

Canterbury Jockey Club’s Meeting Concludes

The Canterbury Jockey Club’s metropolitan meeting 1 was concluded at Riccarton on Saturday. The weather was fine until the last race was due to start, when steady rain set in. This developed into almost a torrential rainfall just as the race was concluded, and, in consequence, the majority of racegoers, caught unawares, received a drenching before they were able to leave the course. The attendance was the best for the- four days of racing, and all were treated to some of the most exciting finishes seen on the course for a long time, reflecting great credit on the handicapper, Mr J. E. Henrys, who received widespread congratulations on the results of his adjustments. The starting, too, contributed a good deal towards the excellent races, Mr P. D. Mac Nab being in his best form not only on Saturday but throughout the meeting. Speculation was very spirited, a substantial increase in the figures on the first race gradually growing as the programme progressed until at the end of the day the total for the two machines was £65,301 (win £28,999, place £36,302), as against £48,277 (win £19,874 10s, place £28,402 10s) on the corresponding day last year. The total for the meeting was £183,742 10s (win £85,519 10s, place £98,223), as compared with £141,195 (win £60,918 10s, place £80,276 10s) at last year’s meeting, fepresenting an increase of £42,547 10s. A comparative table showing the figures for the last eight metropolitan meetings is as follows: First Day. Second Day. Third Day. Fourth Day. Totals. £ £ £ £ 1929 .. 63,776 46,038 44,859 64,431 219,104 1930 .. 48,674 33,727 33,300 46,149 161,857 1931 .. 34,417 22,137 22,207 31,125 109,888 1932 .. 28,635 16,592 16,492 28,859 86,587 1933 w 35,940 13,485 22,414 38,419 110,164 1934 .. 36,322 22,451 20,764 35,774 115,311 1935 .. 41,341 28,907 22,670 48,277 141,195 1936 .. 49,637 30,548 38,256 65,301 183,742

±*he principal event, the Metropolitan Handicap, provided, as anticipated from the high-class field engaged, a most spectacular contest, culminating in a very close finish, in which four horses took part. Argentic outstayed his rivals to win by a narrow margin from Mhster Brierly, with Sunee and Might close up. The open sprint, the Members’ Handicap, brought about the defeats of the favourites, Triune, who paid a surprisingly good dividend, having another impressive win from Capital and Greek Gold, who both also made good place returns. Siegmund, the Son-in-Law horse, by Siegfried from the Limond mare Lilimond, created a surprise by a convincing win in the three-year-old event, . the Stonyhurst Handicap, He ran the mile in Imin 39 2-ssec, the last half-mile in 48 4-ssec. One of the most popular victories of the day was that of the _ veteran _ Great Star, who completed his task in the Cressy Handicap in a dogged manner, reminiscent of his best days. He was given a hearty reception on returning to the birdcage. Great Star is one of the Solferino breed, and although he is how 11 years of age he is as sound as when he first raced, and seems fit to earn much more distinction before it is thought advisable to retire him. The Trentham stable of H. B. Lorigan supplied the winner of the Hagley Handicap, Geitel getting up in the last stride to beat the well-fancied Soy ereign Lady on the post, with Willie Win close up. Geitel, like his stablemate Toper, was bred in Australia. Triune is also Australian-bred. The Pioneer Handicap, for two-year-clds, was marked by a courageous effort on the part of the Chokebore filly Counterblast, who, carrying the Steadier of 9-4, was only beaten ir the last stride by Royal Chief, to whom she conceded 91b. The Governor-General, Lord Galway, and Lady Galway were interested spectators for most of the afternoon, and Lord Galway, accompanied by Mr A. S. Elworthy, chairman of the club’s committee, spent some time amongst patrons in the outside enclosure. The meeting was excellently conducted throughout, and much credit is due to all officials for the smooth running of all the arrangements, a feature being the close observance of the advertised time-table. The totalisator staff had a very busy day, but there were no delays either in receiving or paying out, and the machines were closed practically on time for the concluding event. The chairman, Mr Elworthy, and the members of his committee carried cut their various duties with .evident satisfaction to all, and the organisation of the secretary, Mr F. T. H. Bell, once again was all that could be desired. Details of the racing are as follows: SUBURBAN HANDICAP, Of 250 soVs; second horse 50 sovs, and third horse 25 sovs from stake. One mile. g. 5— W. MEMBERS’ HANDICAP,

A Veteran Returns Ponty accounted for the bulk of the investments in the Cressy Handicap, but had to submit to a narrow defeat into third place. Great Star was the first to show out, but was steadied in behind Wild Career, who led round the home turn and into the straight from McHeath, Ponty, Great Star, and Tunneller. Ponty ran up to Wild Career inside the distance, and the issue appeared to rest between this pair until Great Star made a dashing effort on the rails on the inside of Wild Career, and in an exciting struggle, the veteran got up to snatch victory from Wild Career by a head, with a similar margin to Ponty. Guarantee, last at the half-mile, finished fast into fourth place two lengths away, with McHeath, Tunneller, Queen Dorothy, Manetho, and Fairway following in that order.

Great Star, now in his eleventh year, made a remarkable come-back, and although he won a race at Rangiora on Labour. Day, it is some time since he was successful at Riccarton or any other metropolitan course. He appeared to be out of the contest when he went back early, but showed a telling effort to get up in the last furlong. Wild Career ran up to the form expected of him earlier in the week. Ponty made a creditable fight, having to give away a lot of weight to the pair in front of him. Guarantee showed further improvement. He was the last away, and was several lengths in the rear at the home turn. Speedy Juveniles

The finish of the Pioneer Handicap was one of the most exciting of the meeting. The field got away pn good terms, the first to show out being Top Row and Happy Knight, who led on to the course proper from Counterblast, Lazybones, Garonne, Screamer, Allspice, and Royal Chief, all running in fairly close order. Counterblast was the first to tackle Top Row, and then Lazybones and Royal Chief joined in. There was a prolonged finish. Counterblast had her head in front a furlong from home, and despite determined efforts by both Lazybones and Royal Chief, held on to her advantage to within a few strides of the line, where Royal Chief, under vigorous horsemanship, asserted himself to get up to gain a neck verdict, with Lazybones only a head away, half a length in front of Top Row. There was then a gap to Screamer. Happy Night, Allspice, and Garonne, with Airam and Card Player next. Royal Chiefs win was very impressive. as he was under severe punishment over the last 50 yards, and re-

At the distance Triune came through to win by two lengths from Capital, with Greek Gold a head away. Concertpitch was fourth. Time, Imin 11 2-ssec. Winner trained by owner, Avondale. NOTES ON THE RACING Recollection’s First Win The Suburban Handicap, under high-weight conditions, resulted in an easy win for Recollection, who ran second to Toper in the similar event on the second day. Jack Ahoy was the last away, and Hithyia acted as pacemaker from Nightbound, Convivial. Grampion, Cyclonic, Peacock, and Recollection. Hithyia dropped out turning for home, and Nightbound, Convivial, and Cyclonic were almost on terms entering the straight with Recollection handy. Convivial had Nightbound beaten at the distance, but a little further on Recollection shot out, and soon placed the issue beyond doubt, winning easily from ’Convivial, who as comfortably held off Cyclonic. Toper came from well back to get within a neck of Cyclonic, with Jack Ahoy, Nightbound, Grampian, Dropped Catch, Peacock, and Hithyia following in that order. Recollection was sold last month by Sir Charles Clifford, and this was his first success. He was riddten in his previous engagement by R. Beale, who took the mount in this race on Convivial. The latter was always prominent, but was no match for the winner. Cyclonic ran his best race since being raced by his present owner. Toper was going well rounding the far turn, when he gof squeezed back, and by the time he was balanced again the leaders were a long way in front of him. His finishing effort suggested that he would have taken part in the final tussle if he had had an uninterrupted run. Jack Ahoy was also unlucky, as he lost a lot of ground at the start. Nightbound looked likely entering the home run, but stopped very quickly. Fiord Stays On

Fiord had a popular victory in the Seymour Handicap after a sustained run from the distance. Black Thread took charge at the end of two furlongs, and led round the top and into the straight from Black Coat, Fiord, Joyous, Vola Dale, Roaming, Land Raid, and Impersonator. Fiord asserted himself after the distance was passedj and soon disposing of Black Thread went on to win comfortably by a length. In a close tussle for second money, Black Thread held off Rose of Tralee to beat her by a head. Roaming finished very fast into fourth place a length away, with Land Raid. Joyous, Glenavon, Mutus, and Silver Slipper next.

Fiord won well, and was not actually troubled once he went to the front. Black Thread had every chance, but again weakened at the right end. Rose of Tralee was one of the first to show out, but was sent back rounding the far turn, and did well to get into the money. Roaming also had to put up a creditable performance, as he was the last, with Mutus, to leave the mark. Joyous was in tl-e picture within half a furlong of the post, and Land Raid also loomed up momentarily nearing home, but faded out under his big weight. The second day’s winner, Orange Bud, and also Silver Slippep were never prominent.

sponded very gamely. In defeat, Counterblast put up a most ■ creditable performance under her solid impost, and gave in only in the last stride. Lazybones ran another good race, and his performances at the meeting showed he is now acting up to his early promise. Top Row again reeled off a fast haif mile, and hung on well, but could not withstand the final challenge. Happy Night gave promise when he accompanied Top Row to the distance post, but stopped badly. Screamer, who raced in his new colours, having been leased by Mr N. E. Aitken, former half-owner of Autopay, gave a pleasing display, but Garonne, Card Player, and Airam were disappointing. Argentic Outstays Opponents The Metropolitan Handicap was one of the best contests in the history of the race, and although the winner, Argentic, was not in much favour with the public, his success was none the less popular, as his finishing run was a feature of the day’s racing. After some trouble at the start, an excellent dispatch was effected, the first to shew out being Cuddle and Travenns, and this pair carried on through the back stretch from Gold Boy, Southdown, Fersen, The Surgeon, and Rona Bay, with Argentic, Polydora, and Master Brierly bringing up the rear. There was very little change passing the half mile, but Cuddle had had enough when the straight entrance was reached, and Travenna was the first to turn for home from Gay Boy, Cuddle. Sunee, The Surgeon, Might, Argentic and Master Brierly. Master Brierly and Argentic worked their way through to the leaders as soon as the field straightened up, with Might also becoming prominent. Master Brierly was the first to head off Travenna, and then Argentic and Sunee challenged. Sunee had a slight advantage 100 yards from the post, but could not continue, and Argentic and Master Brierly had a great set-to, tlje former outstaying the northerner to beat him by a neck. Sunee was a close third, a length in front of Might, with a gap to Tout le Monde, Tivavenna, Polydora, Rona Bay, and The Surgeon, who were well spread out, the last to finish being Cuddle, Fersen, and Southdown, the last-named being a long way down the course. Argentic had a deserving win. by his often proved staying ability. Master Brierly had a track to his liking, and finished very subbornly after being a good way from the front turning for home. Sunee looked a winner nearing the post, but just failed to see the ordeal through. Might showed a big improvement, but many of the others disappointed in the face of their previous races at the meeting, these including Cuddle, Fersen, Polydora, and The Surgeon. Fersen especially cracked up badly. A Trentham Winner The Hagley Handicap produced another interesting tussle over the last furlong. Pink Del was the early leader, but at the end of two furlongs Heloise, who was last away, was in front from Pink Del, Lofty, Sovereign Lady, and Rebel Lad. Heloise was still in charge entering the straight from Sovereign Lady, Pink Del, Convivial. Lofty, Geitel, and Rebel Lad, with High Glee and Willie Win also prominent. Sovereign Lad- 1 - had worked her way to the front afte.- passing the distance, but was then challenged by Willie Win, Lofty. Convivial, and Geitel. In a battling struggle, Geitel just got up in the last stride to beat Sovereign Lady by the narrowest of margins, with Willie Win a neck away. Lofty was a length back, just in front of Heloise, Swordstick, High Glee, Rebel Lad, Convivial, Jack Ahoy, and Pink Del.

Geitel had to put up a long finishing run to get up on the line. Sovereign Lady hung on well, but was probably asked to make her effort too early in the run home. Willie Win had only Jack Ahoy behind him at the half mile, and his performance in disputing the honours was again full of merit. Lofty was always handy, and finished well, but Rebel Lad. Convivial, and Swordstick did not complete their tasks as well as expected. Heloise and Pink Del both drifted out in the straight. The time, Imin 52sec, was good for hacks, the last half mile being run in 50 3-ssec. Siegmund’s Surprise The Stonyhurst Handicap resulted in a mild surprise, as the winner, Siegraund, was only moderately supported.

Epic rushed away with the early lead, and, with Laughing Lass as his nearest companion, led into the straight from Stolen March, Siegmund, and Wine Card, with Cerne Abbas in last place. Epic did not last long in the run home, and' Laughing Lass was in charge at the distance from Stolen March, Siegmund. Cerne Abbas, ana Wine Card. Siegmund then put in his claim, and, soon gathering in Stolen March, went on to gain a comfortable win. In a hard tussle for second honours, Stolen March just beat the faster-finishing Cerne Abbas by a head. Laughing Lass eased off into fourth place, three lengths away, in front of Rousseau, Top Notch, Epic, and Wine Card. Siegmund actually outclassed his opponents in the last few chains. He raced disappointingly at the recent Trentham meeting, and also earlier at this meeting, and there was some excuse for investors neglecting him. Stolen March ran a solid race throughout. and showed stamina in warding off Cerne Abbas, who had to make up a lot of leeway over the last three furlongs. Laughing Lass looked to be Ihe winner inside the distance, but once again found the journey beyond her. Top Notch shaped poorly in the face of her previous form at the meeting. Triune Again There was some spirited speculation in the concluding event, the Members’ Handicap, the pool totalling more than £IO.OOO, which had not been reached at Riccarton for many years. Paper Slipper, Emissary, and the MatoruDollar Bill bracket were fairly evenly supnorted, but none made a return. There was a steady rainfall while the horses were being lined up, and it was difficult to follow their fortunes over (he early stages, but when the course proper was reached, Knockfin was definitely in front from Emissary, Capital, Matoru, and Concertpitch, with Paper Slipper, Triune, and Greek Gold closely following. There was a line stretched across the track inside the distance, and another blanket finish looked imminent, but Triune shot to the front 50 yards from the post, and ran home one of the easiest winners of ihe day. In a slogging finish for second honours, Capital just beat Greek Gold on the post, with Concertpitch finishing fast into fourth place, another head away. Matoru was next, in front of Paper Slipper, Dollar Bill, Emissary, and Silver Sail. Triune was not troubled once he took charge, and he can claim to be the most consistent sprinter at the meeting, with two wins and a third placing in four starts. Capital ran his best race of the week, and retains his form to a marked degree. Greek Gold has also been very consistent, with one win and two second placings. Concertpitch showed improvement, and was doing better at the end than most of the others. Matoru and Dollar Bill both showed up prominently a furlong from home, where Paper Slipper was also handy to the leaders, but all weakened nearing the end. Emissary showed his usual speed, but the damp conditions were again against him. Knockfin stopped badly when she was in a commanding position in front on the rails. WINNING OWNERS The sum of £12,325 was distributed in stakes at the meeting, the principal winning owner being Sir Charles Clifford, who, in addition to winning eight races, collected first and second prize money in the New Zealand Derby.
