TITANIA’S BALL

A GREAT SUCCESS MANY DISTINGUISHED GUESTS Titania’s ball, in aid of crippled children, held at the Winter Garden last night, was a record success in every way, success contributed to in no small measure by the fact that the ball was honoured by the presence of the Governor-General, Lord Galway, and Lady Galway. Other distinguished overseas guests whom the committee had much pleasure in welcoming to the ball were Lord and Lady Hartington, who accompanied their Excellencies, Sir Edward and Lady Harding (.London), and Captain I. Glennie and Paymaster-Lieutenant Woodifield, of the Achilles, with whom were several of the ship’s officers. Their Excellencies were attended by Captain A. G. W. Heber-Percy and Mr Boyd-Sbannon accompanied Lord Hartington. Other overseas visitors present were Captain J. B. E. Hall, of the sloop Wellington, and Mrs Hall, and Lord and Lady Walerap. * The ballroom has seldom looked more festive. Clusters of green and white balloons were suspended from the ceiling. The alcove reserved for the vice-regal party was decorated with arum lilies, and the bandstand was banked with lilies, and in all the alcoves were low bowls of roses and of mixed flowers and high vases of arum lilies. In the supper-room, where a buffet supper was served, their Excellencies’ table was draped with red and decorated with nasturtiums and Iceland poppies, and in the lounge masses of flowers were used with excellent decorative effect. Music was played by the Bailey-Marston orchestra. Her Excellency wore a trained gown of wallflower-brown velvet, with facings of gold lame. On her arrival she was presented by Mrs G. Anderson with a bouquet from the committee. Lady Hartington wore a gown of pearl grey satin patterned in blurred floral design in white and pale pink. Lady Harding wore a frock .of dark green lace with matching cape, and sash of green velvet. Lady Waleran wore a frock of pale pink chiffon, finished with large amber ornament at the of the neckline. Mrs Aitken’s japonica cloque trained frock was worn with a spray of flowers of the material, and she carried a large black fan; Mrs Wright, a frock of brown and ivory delicately patterned chirton with crossed sashes and bow in front of brown velvet; Mrs Will wore a navy floral crepe frock patterned with large floral design in shades of green, brighter blue, red, and white; Mrs Reid wore a green, gold, and cherry brocade frock in paisley design, with long scarves of cherry georgette held with a gold clasp in front; Mrs Hossmore Cracroft Wilson, black floral crepe de chine patterned in ivory, red, and lime green; Mrs P. A. Ardagn wore a trained gown of midnight blue satin with bodice draped in front; Mrs Gerald Anderson;Wore a trained gowh of heavy black georgette, with squaie cut neckline and large aiamente ornament at the waistline at the back; Miss Enright wore a slightly trained frock of patterned crepe with long shoulder spray of shaded flowers to tone; Miss Janet Stevenson, primrose crepe de chine patterned with large white black-centred poppies, and long cape of black pleated net.

FAREWELL PARTY Members of the Ladies’ Guild of the Cambridge Terrace Methodist Church and their friends met in the church schoolroom to say good-bye to Miss J. Hill, who will leave shortly for a visit to India and England. Mrs T. Hallam (president) welcomed the guest of honour, and Mrs Pickering presented her with a bouquet of flow ers. An entertaining programme wa„ enjoyed, the contributors being: Misses R. Kirk and M. Pickering (duet), Misses Messenger and Caygill (elocutionary items). Accompaniments were played by Mrs W. Anderson. Mrs Kirk was the winner of a competition. On behalf of the guild, Mrs H. Holland presented the guest of honour with a diary, as a token of goodwill. The Rev. W. B.
