SOUTH AMERICAN JOURNEY
The Green Paradise. By Catherine Robinson. Lothian Publishing Co. (Pty.) Ltd. 126 pp. (5/-)
If is as “a green paradise” that South America remains in the author’s memory. She does not recall the terrors or hardships of jungle or river passage, poisoned arrows, or fevers, but “the dainty little humming-birds in their delicate and iridescent beauty, with wings awhirr in some gorgeous bellshaped flower, rich magnificent nights, scented and purple, With a clear and golden moon shining out of a tropical sky, golden beaches lapped lazily by the lapis lazuli waters of the Atlantic, and, above all things, the gentle courtesy of the people.” The author disclaims “the gifts of a narrator” but manages without them to’convey a pleasant, if rather indistinct, impression of journeys up the Amazon, in the Argentine lake district, up the Brazilian coast, and elsewhere. There are nearly 50 photographic illustrations.
