Self Mastery Through Psycho-Analysis. By Basil Hogarth. Rider .and, Co, Through Whitcombe and Tombs, Ltd. 160 pp. (3/6 net.) The object of this book is to give an account for laymen Of the methods of psycho-analysis. Like s. many of the popular exponents of this subject, Mr Hogarth uses words! very carelessly. He says, that “the status of psycho-analysis among the sciences is now conceded.” How psycho-analysis is a science and what its status is are matters left unexplained. Assertions to the effect that Freud is the greatest public benefactor science’ has ever known do not increase our confidence in the author that makes; them. Nevertheless, the book is not without value and will give the uninstructed reader some elementary ideas of what is meant by a complex, by repression and by symbolism. An intelligent use of the suggestions made in it may even help, a sensible student in his own. personal life.. . . . - * i
