DAY-DREAMING
I was staring at one of my favourite pictures, a ship.
Suddenly a whirring sound was heard and I found myself on the deck of the ship. The sailors were singing as they went about their duties, while overhead the sails billowing white against a clear sky of sapphire blue, flapped lazily against the stout timbers of the masts. Far out on the horizon the sun was setting in a radiance of scarlet splendour. There was scarce a sound; scarce a ripple, save the wavelets made in the wake of the gallant little ship. Suddenly the sky turned black, cloudy and threatening the waves beat hungrily against the ship’s side as if endeavouring to claim another victim.
Away to the east land was sighted towering' above the stormy waves. The ship bravely ploughed on through the billows that threatened
her with destruction. The stormy sea dashed high on the stern and rockbound coast, while the savage hordes of Neptune's sea-horses danced angrily round the barque’s side The sailors’ husky voices bawled in harmony with the creaking timbers, and straining canvas sails. Then a streak of light flashed across my eyes and I wakened from my pleasant day-dream. —’MATE GAPPY, A.8.H., Riccarton.
