baring squam GUILD MEETING AT ASHBURTON ADDRESS ON “SOURCES OP METHODISM” The Baring Square Radies’ Guild met on Thursday afternoon, with the Rev Angus Mcßoan presiding. An invitation was received from Mrs Baker for the Church Guild to join the Parsonage Guild in its picnic to be held at the Tuarangi Heme. It was announced by Sister Mildred that the senior Bible class would hold a bazaar on November 24, and the interest of guild • members would be appreciated. An invitation was received from the Mid-Canterbury Federation of Women’s Institutes to the lecture to be given by Mrs Alfred Watt, 0.8. E., on November 25. It was decided to hold the guild picnic on the first Thursday in February, a small committee being set up to make arrangements. The hostesses were Mesdames Fowke, Hopkins, and Wishart. An address, entitled “The Sources of Methodism,” was given by Mr McBean, who referred to the work of the Wesley brothers, which included their wonderful and long years of preaching, their genius for organisation, and their great record of hymn writing. MISS JEAN BATTEN’S TOUR BRIEF STAY AT ASHBURTON Miss Jean Batten arrived at Ashburton from the West Coast on Thursday evening, and spent the night at the Hotel Somerset. She left for Queenstown by car yesterday morning, to continue her tour of the South Island. Many autograph hunters, mostly children, who learnt of Miss Batten’s unexpected arrival in Ashburton, were at the hotel yesterday morning. EXCURSION TO CITY EXODUS OF ASHBURTON RESIDENTS There was an exodus of Ashburton residents to Christchurch yesterday to visit the Royal Show and the races at Addington. A total of 422, compared with 350 last year and 398 in 1934, joined the early morning train, while a further contingent of 90. compared with 80 last year, followed on the special train from Timaru, which carried more than 500 passengers from southern stations. The town observed a whole holiday, and a number of residents who did not visit Christchurch, took advantage of the fine day to go picnicking at resorts near Ashburton. CROQUET PROGRESSIVE ' TOURNAMENT HELD A progressive croquet tournament, in which members of the Allenton, Ashburton, and Waireka clubs took part, was held on the Allenton lawns yesterday. The winner of the senior prize was Mrs J. P. Cleary (Ashburton), and Mrs' R. W. Barr (Allenton) won the junior. METHVEN BEATS ASHBURTON The Methven Croquet Club played the first match of the season on Thursday, when they beat Ashburton in the South Canterbury B grade competition. The match was played on the Methven green, which was in good order. Methven won by seven games to two. BOWLING TOURNAMENT GALA FUND TO BENEFIT The Ashburton gala fund will be augmented by £3 as a result of a progressive pairs tournament, conducted by the Ashburton Bowling Club yesterday. The winning skip was P. Dunn, with four wins out of five, while W. Tulloch was runner-up with three wins. W. B. Thomas, was the winning lead, with a possible of five wins. W. Dakers and D. E. Tobin tied with four, and in the play-off for four heads. Tcbin won by three points to two. The prizes were given by P. Dunn, H. Colquhoun, W. J. Minogue, and W. Christmas. Dunn returned his trophy to the fund. Twenty players took part in the tournament. The fortnightly meeting of Hakatere Lodge, 1.0.0. F., was held recently, with Ihe N.G. (Bro. W. Barrett) presiding. The N.G. reported cn the recent visit to the Wakanui Lodge. After lodge closed, a social evening was held.
