Treasures rivalling in interest and richness those discovered in Egyptian tombs may shortly come to light at Aksum, the holy city of Ethiopia, Italian archaeologists are resuming searches begun in 1928, and already two tombs of ancient kings have been uncovered. Aksum has long been recognised as a centre of extraordinary interest to the archaeologist, for it was the capital of Abyssinia in the days of Rome —the focus of trade and the centre of religion. Caravans of gold, ivory, precious stones, and perfumes opened up trade with Rome and Greece. Though largely in ruins, the city contains some very flpe specimens of Greek architecture. Inscriptions have been found which confirm that the early Africans were sun-wor-shippers.
