IMPROVEMENTS TO POST ; OFFICE INCREASE IN BUSINESS NOTED Several improvements have been made recently to the Kaikoura post office buildings. The staff has been working under difficulties, to cope with the increased volume of business. Tajs, to some extent, has been brought about by the increase in the copulation of the district caused by {he construction of the South Island Main Trunk railway. One great acquisition is station for the telephone service between Christchurch and the North Island, which it is hoped will be finished by the end cf the month. The manager presented his monthly report, giving the quantity of butter manufactured during the month of October. Notice was received from the New Zealand Dairy Board that the chairman. Mr Humm. had been elected delegate lo the ward conference, to be held in Blenheim on December 7 It was decided to invite Mr A. H. Gray to address the directors, explaining the dairy industry insurance proposals. I MINISTER’S VISIT TO I AKAROA j SEVERAL DEPUTATIONS I APPOINTED | Deputations from the Akaroa Cocksfoot Seed Growers’ Association. Banks Peninsula branch of the Farmers’ Union, and Banks Peninsula Dairy Factories’ Association, will wait upon the Hon. W. Lee Marlin, Minister for i Agriculture, when he visits Akaroa on . Monday. Besides the Minister and his party. Mr T. H. McCombs, M.P.. and probably Mr R. McGlllivray, Fields Superintendent, Department of Agriculture, will visit Akaroa also. The party will be entertained by the j members of the Akaroa Borough and i Akaroa County Councils. ! The speakers for the various deputa- i tions will be Messrs F. G. Armstrong 1 (chairman!. W. H. Centennial Funds ' There was a good attendance at the ’ flag 500 evening held in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Akaroa, in aid of the proposed Centennial Town Hall. Mrs R. Allen, by a substantial majority, was the winner for the high- : est aggregate of the card parties, and Mr W. H. Priest was second. The players at the winning table for the evening’s play were Mrs R. Allen. Misses I. Mahon, and E. Rudden.

SPRINGSTON SOUTH j The Sunday school held its annual I tea. concert, and prize-giving in the I Memorial Hall. The report and bal- | ance-sheet were presented by the superj intendent. Mr J. Marshall, and showed a satisfactory balance. The Rev. Mr Kendon (Springston) gave a short address. Musical items were given by senior and junior scholars; piano duet by Miss Joyce Moore and Mabel Benny; recitations, Ailsa Chapman, Cynthia Fletcher, Molly Keast; mouthorgan solos. Jack Hamilton; vocal duets. Nola and Owen Hoskin. Keith and Lois Kendon. Margaret Bray and Cynthia Fletcher: songs, Mrs L. Dulieu, Miss M. Mounce. Messrs H. Hoskin, and R. Harris; dialogue, Miss P. Hamilton and Joan Bray. The accompanists were Miss Porter, Mrs H. Fletcher. Mrs Kendon. and Mr F. Hewitt. Mr Marshall presented the prizes. DARFIELD WCTURES l "Cardinal Richelieu," George Arliss's best picture, will be screened at the! Darfleld picture theatre to-night and on Monday night. Critics say that j Arliss is better in this picture than in | "Disraeli" or "Rothschild." The picture j is well produced.
