TURF GOSSIP / Reminder Nominations for the ■ Ashburton County Racing Club’s summer meeting will close at 8 p.m. on Tuesday next. Related to Bobrikoff Nightbpund showed up prominently in the high-weight event at Motukarara, and finished a good second to Orange Bud on the second day. He can therefore be expected to be a useful candidate in the high-weight race at Riccarton to-day, in which he will be ridden by his trainer, D. O’Connor. Nightbound, who no doubt will later be tried as a jumper, is an upstanding-gelding by Night Raid from En Parole, who, by Finland from Gossip is a sister to the mighty Bobrikoff. Others from En Parole were Right and Left, Phoenix Park. and Great Charter. En Parole was purchased in 1930 by Spearmarch’s owner. Mr H. Elworthy. of Timaru, who bred and races Nightbound. A Sturdy Galloper Fiord created a good impression by his success at Rangiora on Labour Day and did some good work on the tracks before the Cup meeting. He tailed, however, to show up in the Linwood Handicap on the first day, and to-day’s Cressy Handicap will mark his second appearance at the meeting. Fiord is also an acceptor for the Hagley Handicap, nine furlongs, but is likely to tackle the shorter race, in which he will be ridden by H. Wiggins.

A Strong Trio Sir Charles Clifford will hold a strong hand in the Pioneer Handicap to-day if he elects to start his three representatives. Counterblast, Card Player, and Mob Rule. If Counterblast is produced, the bracket is sure to be at a short price, but as the form of a number of the opposition hps been reasonably good, the speculation on the race is not likely to suffer seriously by the presence of the Chokebore trio. Counterblast is faced with a very difficult problem under 9-4. but has shown stamina as well as speed in her races, and the extra poundage over a short journey should not prevent her from again earning distinction. Conditions to Suit

Master Briefly did not put a foot right in the New Zealand Cup owing to the track, but unproved considerably in the Canterbury" Cup when the surface wds much firmer. He is handily placed in to-day’s Metropolitan Handicap, and should the weather keep fine, the .conditions will be made to order for him. # likes a Journey Convivial has been improving since she was'trained at Riccarton, and her effort in the Otaio Plate on Wednesday was full of merit. She is engaged in two events to-day, and it may be decided to start her in both, but in all probability she will be reserved for the nine furlong Hagley Handicap, as the longer distance and lighter impost wiU be to her advantage. Gay Boy’s Credentials Gay Boy was not produced on Wednesday owing to his failure to handle the soft going on the second day, snu he was accepted for in the Metropolitan Handicap, in the hope that there would be a firm track. He has good recent form to recommend him, ms success at Trentham when he beat Davolo, Red Manfred, Argentic, and Might over a mile and a quarter bemg especially attractive. The distance was covered in 2min s|sec, an indication that the track was fast, and should conditions be similar to-day, he can be expected to make a bold showing. Fillies Predominate

Epic promised earlier in the season to develop into a useful stake-earner, but except for filling second place to Paper Slipper in the Dunedin Guineas, his record this season has been moderate. He is engaged in the Stonyhurst Handicap to-day. but will be opposed by several who have shown winning form of late. This race is for three-year-olds, and it is interesting that of the 10 acceptors, seven are fillies, A Select Field

One of the best races from a totalisator point of view at the New Zealand Cup meeting is likely to be the Members’ Handicap, the concluding event of the gathering. Some or the best sprinters in the Dominion will be engaged, including winners during the week in Paper Slipper, Triune, Greek Gold, and Land Ral< L and place-getters in Knockfln and Matoru. With a dry track, the pace is likely to be on all the .way, and it would not be surprising if the fastest time of the meeting was recorded.

Highly Regarded Eouseau will be put to a strong test in to-day’s Stonyhurst Handicap. This son of Robespierre and Kildee. a sister to Songbird, has always shown much promise, but has yet to win a race. He finished very fast in the Spring Plate on the first aay after being one of the last to leave the barrier, but did not shape as well as expected in his engagement on the tniro day. He has given indications or staying on, and might spring a surprise over a mile journey to-day.

A Powerful Pair Willie Win was unlucky in losing some valuable ground in the early stages of the Otaio Plate on Wednesday. and then filled second place to Mandamus. He,will have another opportunity to-day in the Hagley Handicap, and better placed early is certain to take part in the finish. His strongest opponent may be Sovereign Lady, who has given evidence of being partial to a middle distance. She is by Winning Hit from Liege Lady by Paladin from imported Strona, ann will have the services to-day of B. H. Morris.

A Speedy Sprinter Emissary was withdrawn from his races on the second and third days owing to the soft- ground, as he is of no use on anything but a firm surface. He will have a track to suit to-day if there is no unfavourable change in the weather, and no doubt with Mosris in the saddle he will uispute the honour of favouritism. Indisposed The Auckland owner-trainer, Mr W. H. M[aria, has been unable to be present to see Triune run at Riccarton, as he is an inmate of a private hospital, and is to undergo an operation.

Toclcy Street After being indulged in a spell extending over several weeks, Tooley Street, has rejoined the daily workers at Ellerslie. He is doing only light tasks at present, and as he has no immediate engagements, H. Rama does not intend to hurry the son of Surveyor. It is some time since Tooley Street won a race; still, he has been in the money on several occasions, and may be a better horse after his spell. Interesting Reminiscences There have been some mighty records put up in the history of the Now Zealand Derby that would beat the records of any other Derby in the world. They are old-standing and, having stood the test of time, may never be equalled. Mr G. G. Stead won no fewer than 12 New Zealand Derbyfe, which is a world record for any one owner. His successes were achieved by the following:—Maxim, Scots Grey, Medallion, Stepniak, Blue Fire, Uniform. Multiform, Altair, Menschikoff, Orloff. Nightfall, and Noctuiform. All the winners were trained by R. J. Mason, so to him as mentor also goes a world record. R. Derrett, who still resides near the Riccarton racecoures, and who was present for Monday’s contest, rode no fewer than eight winners of this important race. He won his first Derby as far back as 1878, or just on 60 years ago. His winning mounts were: Natatdr. Cheviot. Disowned. Florrie, Blue Free. Stepniak, Uniform, and Multiform. The Libel horse. Traducer, also holds the record, perhaps never equalled in the 'World, of siring nine winners of a Derby. Progeny of his who led the field home in the New Zealand Derby were: Scandal, Envy, Defamation. Calumny, Trump Card. Natator, Sir Modred, The Dauphin, and Cheviot. TROTTING NOTES A Reminder Nominations for trotting events at the Ashburton County Racing Club’s summer meeting will close on Tuesday. A Fast Track The track at Addington yesterday was well watered and graded after each race, and possibly was not so fast as on Thursday, although it provided almost perfect going for all. In the principal event the winner. Grand Mogul, handicapped to do 4min 26sec, was compelled to register 4min 21sec; Harold Logan, in third place, registered 4min 18 3-ssec. This is not by any means the little champion’s fastest two miles, but it was one of his best performances. To have won, the back-marker, Roi I’Or, would need to have done better than 4min Msec, for the winner had something in reserve at the finish. Unlucky

New Derby was pacing especially well in the Louisson Handicap at Addington ye terday when he was interfered with, and had a sulky wheel badly buckled. A win for the visitor would have been well received. Feeling the Strain The earlier racing at the meeting evidently affected the form of several hbrses, and yesterday Gallant Knight, Indianapolis. Graham Direct, and Blue Mountain were plainly feeling the effects of their earlier racing.
