HOPE FOR EARLY AGREEMENT
COMMITTEE’S REPORT POSTED
TO DOMINIONS
LONDON, November 11
Replying to the debate in the House of Lords, Lord Templemore said that the report of the Imperial Shipping Committee was being sent to the Dominion Governments and would, he hoped, be published in two or three weeks. The Government intended to approach othei Governments and formulate views in the hope of reaching an agreement. . , , , . . „ The whole question of shipping was exceedingly complicated, and the Government was of opinion that it must be dealt with, in a great degree, piecemeal, by the giving Or. a tramp subsidy and supporting other schemes brought in in the last few years. The British Government would not wait for approaches from other Governments, but would formulate its own views and communicate them to the Dominions. “We must move with the Dominions,” said Lord Templemore, “but as far as possible we will take the lead and try to get an agreement in a reasonable time.” The Government was dispatching the report to the Dominions by air mail, said Lord Templemore. NEW ZEALAND PREPARED TO ASSIST NO DEFINITE PROPOSALS (press association telegram.) WELLINGTON, November 12. “They are well ahead of me,” said the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) when informed of the reported decision of the Imperial Maritime Committee, which will. result in two fast British ships being built for the Pacific service. “We have no definite proposals,” he added. “We laid it down at the beginning that we were prepared to assist in keeping British ships on the Pacific, but we wanted to have some say in the conditions affecting the travelling public and the employees. It is no use beginning at the wrong end. No proposal of a definite character has been submitted. ,? -
