CHRISTMAS DAY PICTURES
THEATRES* APPLICATION AT AUCKLAND COUNCIL COMMITTEE FRAMES CONDITIONS (PKESS ASSOCIATION XELEGEAII.) AUCKLAND, November 12. The conditions under which picture theatres in the city area will be permitted to open for an evening session on Christmas Day have been framed by the legal and bylaws committee of the City Council. The decision of the committee is subject to ratification by the council. The application for permission to show pictures on the night of Christmas Day was received by the council at its meeting on November 2 from the principal companies operating theatres in the city area. It was stated that the programmes would be submitted for approval, and that no employee would be compelled to work on that day against his or her will.
The application was referred to the committee for consideration. The chairman of the committee, Mr W. T. Anderton, M.P., said the committee had agreed, subject to ratification, to permit the opening of theatres from 8 p.m., conditional upon no employee being compelled to work, and upon payment of not less than 12s to any individual who volunteered for service. He said that according to theVvidence before ' the committee, the picture theatres were well patronised on Christmas Day, and for that reason among others, it w,as considered that such members of the staff as were prepared to serve the public should receive commensurate remuneration.
