CANTERBURY MOUNTED RIFLES

REUNION OP MEMBERS The Canterbury Mounted Rifles, which was formed and accepted for service in 1885, held a reunion of its members last evening. Colonel S. C. P. Nicholls presided, and in a short address outlined the history of the unit. He said that the Mounted Rifles were formed at the time of the Russian war scare, when eight other units were formed in Canterbury. The first commanding officer was Major H. Slater, who had with him Lieutenants W. Acton-Adams and J. S. Williams, and 41 non-commissioned officers and men. The mounted rifles was the ffrst of the new units to make a public appearance, on the Queen’s birthday in the year it was formed. After Major Slater the commanding officers were: 1887, Captain F. H. Cotton; 1888-92, Captain W. Reece; 189395, Captain C. Palairet; 1896-1900, Captain R. Snow; 1901-07, Captain R. Macartney, 19Q8-11, Captain C. Nicholls. After the loyal toast, the following toasts, proposed by Colonel Nicholls, were honoured: “Absent Comrades,” “The Visitors,” and “The Performers.” Items were given by the Returned Soldiers’ Association ' Orchestra, conducted by Mr H. Glaysher, Messrs Dave McGill, C. R. Sumner, C. Goggm, and W. Bell. The pianists were Messrs J. Harpidge and G. Russell.
