TURF GOSSIP Reminder Nominations for the Ashburton County Racing Club’s summer meet- , Jng will close at 8 p.m. on Tuesday next A Foil Book B. Morris will have the mount on Fersen in the Metropolitan Handicap to-morrow and will also ride Joyous, Sovereign Lady, Ponty, Laughing Lass, end Emissary in their engagements. £ Treble Bracket The Chokebore stable has accepted With three two-year-olds in the Pioneer Handicap to-morrow, but there is a possibility that Counterblast will not be produced. Mob Rule as a speedy filly by Winning Hit from Babel, by The Ace from Scrimmage, dam of Fracas, and has had only one race, the maiden event at Motukarara, where she was badly favoured at the start Card Flayer has been very disappointing since she won the McLean Stakes at Wingatui, and will have to show marked improvement on her recent efforts to do any good to-mor-row. The stable also has Lazybones, owned bv Mr G. R. Macdonald, engaged in the event. He ran a good race on Wednesday, and as he appears to be improving with racing, he may be more prominent at the end of tomorrow’s race. • - • - Dual Derby Winners

Talking has joined the select band cf dual Derby winners, as he followed Ms Australian Jockey Club Derby success with another in the Victoria Derby. He made the twenty-eighth horse to complete the double. Whether he can be regarded as being equal to some of his predecessors to accomolish the feat time alone • will tell. Some truly great horses have won the two Derbies, among them being Grand Flaneur, who went through his racing career undefeated. Maltster, Poseidon, Mountain King, Prince Foote, Biplane. Phar Lap, and Trivalve. Five of them afterwards won the Melbourne Cup, but there was a year between the Derby and Cup successes of Phar Lap. Grand Flaneur, Poseidon, Prince Foote, and Trivalve, however, won the Melbourne Cup immediatley after scoring in the Derby. Talking failed in his effort A Valuable Purchase At the Sydney yearling sales in 1924 Wgh prices were paid for Valais yearlings. Mr Moss gave 2000 guineas for .Vaals; the late Frank Marsden paid 1800 guineas for Review; Mr Ben Chaffey, 1400 guineas for Manfred; Mr M. Ryan, 1700 guineas for Benvalais; C. T. Godby, 900 guineas for Swift; Mr E, M. Pearce. 1250 guineas for Val d’Or; and Mr P. H. Osborne, 1700 guineas for Valicare. In Valicare Mr Osborne probably secured the best bargain that day, as she proved a brilliant performer, winning him numerous races, including the Doncaster Handicap, and £12,435 in stakes. She has keen equally valuable at the stud, as •he is the dam of three good winners in Care Free, The Raider, and Siren. Care Free won, among other races, the Cantala Stakes, and The Raider was successful in a few races. Siren, however, Is proving a worthy daughter of her dam, and she is the outstanding three-year-old filly this season. Up to date she has won £2175 in stakes. To that must be added her paddock value later when she completes her racing career. Hot Always in Demand

In discussing Talking’s future prospects, his owner was credited with '•lying that if he won both Derbies Wd St. Legers, his stud career would «e assured, says the Sydney “Referee.” Against this idea it can be pointed *Ut that classic wins have not invariably had that effect in Australia. WOUgh in England the winner of a Derby and St. Leger commands a very «dgh fee whex: retired to the stud. At the same time, while four classic Wins-would make Talking an outstanding performer, the fact that Mr A. E. Cooper has a good collection of Mares may, at first, do more to bring talking into prominence as a sire than outside support. Naturally the exceptional price paid Talking, in addition to his perMdnances, has drawn marked attention to him, but. while breeding and ‘ Woks also recommend him, it remains •0 be seen whether owners of mares - *fll rate him as highly as his owner ypticipates. Leaving Talking out of ip question, it will be interesting to the extent to which breeders . support such recently-retired |iPgh-class performers as Peter Pan

and Hall Mark during the next couple of years. The Cup Final Market When betting business concluded before the contest for the Melbourne Cup, the amounts the horses were backed for are tabulated as follow: £ Talking .. .. 9.000 Silver Standard .. 12,000 Sarcherie .. .. 20.000 Young Crusader 12.000 Mal£ » • . • .. 12.000 Desert Chief .. .. 7,000 Balkan Prince .. 10,000 Amalia ~ .. 7,000 Allunga .. 7,000 Oo •• .. .. 14,000 Bustard .. .. 7,000 Queen of Song .. .. 7,000 Silver Ring .. .. 3.500 Donaster .. .. 15,000 Break Up .. .. 8.000 Dark Chief ~ .. 5,000 Hot Shot .. .. 4,000 Sporting Blood .. .. 7,000 H'll Top .. .. 7,000 Wotan ~ .. 7,000 TROTTING NOTES A Reminder Nominations for trotting events at the Ashburton County Racing Club’s summer meeting will close on Tuesday. Farisieime Parisienne, winner of the New Z?aland Derby, was bred in Auckland by Mr G. McMillan, who a few years ago was one of New Zealand’s leading owners. He purchased her dam, Yenot, from Mr T. H. McGirr, who trained her to win several races. Parisienne is by Frank Worthy from Yenot, who is by Harold Dillon from a mare by Rothschild from Bessie B. by Young Irvington—Min to by Berlin. Parisienne received her early education under the care of the well-known galloping horseman and trainer H. Gray, who prepared the New Zealand Cup winner Fersen. Gray would derive some satisfaction from the success of the winner of yesterday’s classic. Speed and Stamina Discord is a great trotter possessing speed and stamina, but on more than one occasion at Addington she has made mistakes in her races. R. J. Rapley, who drove her yesterday, did not take any risks of being hemmed in, as on the first day, and Discord was given a chance to prove her worth in a fighting finish with Norma Bingen. The unlucky horse of the race was Wahnooka, who had to pick up a lot of ground in the last half mile and broke only a few yards from the post. C. S. Donald, the driver, made an honest attempt to pull the gelding back to its proper gait, a practice that is not always followed by less competent reinsmen.

Use of the Whip Undue use of the whip was noticed in at least two races at Addington yesterday, and it appeared that one horse refused to fight on after the driver of the winner had swished his whip too extravagantly. It is a practice that should be severely dealt with by stipendiary stewards.
