TROTTING AT ADDINGTON

Indianapolis Establishes Mile Record PARISIENNE WINS NEW ZEALAND DERBY Blue Mountain's Success in Ollivier Handicap In almost perfect weather the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club continued its meeting yesterday, and good sport was enjoyed by a crowd much bigger than is usually seen at Addington on an off day. The race track was in splendid order, and horses that had failed to handle the heavy going on the opening day showed great improvement. A feature of the day’s racing was the successful attempt made by Indianapolis to improve upon his mile record of 2min 1 2-ssec. He succeeded by one second and narrowly missed being the first pacer in the southern hemisphere to record two minutes for the distance. Everything considered, Indianapolis put up a remarkable performance, possibly as good as anything registered in America —the home of the trotter. The track had been prepared for racing, not for the breaking of records, and Indianapolis, who had been specially prepared for the two miles in the Cup, would have been a faster horse had he been confined to sprinting in his training work. The race in the New Zealand Cup was a severe one, but the big stallion stripped well, and, assisted for part of the journey by the galloper Cleaner, he paced with all the dash and freedom he had previously shown. It appears, however, that he was not rated to the best advantage to do a mile in two minutes, and extreme speed was attempted in the first half-mile, when the real test should have been over the later stages. Indianapolis fairly flew over the first quartermile, which was covered in 30sec, and he went even faster for the next two furlongs, the half-mile post being passed m 59 3-ssec. After racing at such a speed it was not surprising to find the pacer fading towards the end, and he had nothing more to give when he completed the mile in 2min 0 2-ssec. It was a performance that raised the crowd to enthusiasm, and horse and driver thoroughly deserved the ovation they received from the appreciative public. Indianapolis has proved that the day of the two-minute pacer is not far off, and if Mr G. J. Barton and his very competent trainer, F. C. Dunlevy, elect to make another attempt on the record it is to be hoped that it will he done at a time when a special record-breaking track can be provided.

The totalisator figures showed the public to be well provided with the means for speculation, for although several big dividends diverted a large amount of money into a'very few pockets, the sum of £40,397 was put through the totalisator, against £25,619 10s on the second day last year. In two days’ racing no less than £91,451 has been invested, an increase of £29,045 on the £62,405 10s put through the machine on the first and second days last year. With fine weather to-day the investments should show a still bigger increase.

The veteran trainer R. ,W. Franks scored a popular win in the Whiteleigh Handicap with Ganton, the halfbrother to Indianapolis, although a dividend of more than £4O assisted only a few speculators. F. Holmes won the Ellesmere Handicap after a hard drive behind George Key, and L. A. Maidens showed up the consistency of his little grey pacer. Blue Mountain, who scored an impressive win in the OUivier Handicap. Blue Mountain has come back to the very good form he showed when Maidens produced him in the Cup two years ago. Bingen Palm’s victory in the Le Lievre Handicap was unexpected, and after the race the driver, J. R. Simpson, was presented with a goldmounted whip by Mr E. X. Le Lievre, one of the finest sportsmen the trotting sport has known. . t . To the true lover of the light-harness horse the race for the Derby provided a lot of pleasure. A better-looking field of young pacers has seldom paraded in New Zealand, and the race was won by a truly great filly m Parisienne, whose speed over the last half-mile would have taxed any horse of any age in New Zealand. Produced in first-class fettle by R. B. Berry, Parisienne scored for her Auckland owner, Mrs D. R. Revell, one of the most popular victories in the history of the race. Gamencss, stamina, and speed she showed in a hard race, and there appear to be many good wins in store for the chestnut filly. The unhoppled trotters again showed outstanding ability. While Discord won the Sockburn Handicap, there was merit in the performances of Norma Bingen and Wahnooka. Isabel Derby completed a succession of shocks to speculators when the backers’ reward after the Metropolitan Handicap amounted to nearly £SO. In winning the Clarkson Handicap Cloudy Range proved himself a very brilliant sprinter, a worthy second string to the stable’s favourite, Indianapolis, in the Free for All to be decided to-day. Dunlevy, Addington. # NOTES ON THE RACING An Outsider Backers made a bad start when they elected Waikato Prince favourite for the Whiteleigh Handicap, but although he made a bad break and lost grouno early he showed speed that justified i his selection. The winner was Canton, who was driven by the veteran reins-1 man R. W. Franks. Helen’s Bay mate j a quick beginning, but Polly Pan lost ground. Lady Sonoma, who did no. | trot steadily at any stage, made the, earlv running from Indolent, Helen s i Bayf and Sister Mary, but when a mile , had been covered the field closed up , and there was a fine race. Polly Pan. who was picking up ground rapidly, broke half a mile from home and lost all chance. At the straight entrance the field was well bunched, with Helen’s Bay just in front of Amonos. who had come very fast, Norman Fox, Little Reta. Kuini, and Canton on the extreme outside. It was a punishing finish for the six horses Helen s Bay faded rather badly, but Ganton, finishing at a great rate, got up to score a decisive victory from Amonos, Little Reta, Helen’s Bay. Waikato Prince, and Norman Fox, Ganton. a half-brother by Drusus to Indianapolis, showed more stamina than the remainder and was driven a well-judged race, and the time. 4mm 30sec, for two miles from a 4min 45sec mark, was a particularly _ good effort. Amonos was well back in the early stages, but he trotted steadily all the way and was evidently more at home on ‘the hard going than on the opening day. Little Reta also improved on her previous display, and while Helen s Bay failed only in the last 100 yards, there was more merit in her performance Polly Pan broke when the pressure'was applied, and her chances were affected by a slow beginning. Waikato Prince finished particularly well after being well back in the early stages. A Close Finish The Ellesmere Handicap was run at a fast pace from start to finish, and provided a capital race, especially over the last furlong. Young Frank at once shot to the front, and over the first half mile was closely attended by Queen Author, George Rey, and Mane Celeste. Raydus and Bingen Palm both lost ground and tailed .the field. At the straight entrance Queen Author was just in front of George Rey, Reporter, and Young Frank, with Supertax and Nervie’s Last handily placed. Nervie’s Last was lucky tp find an opening on the rails, but in a hard finish he had no chance with George Rey who scored a narrow victory over Reporter. Raydus, who finished very fast, was fourth, and Bingen Palm George Rey did not win out of his, turn, and although he paid a doublefigure dividend on the win machine, the victory was a popular one. He is a solid pacer, with excellent prospects. Reporter failed to see the journey out, and Nervie’s Last had none of the luck in the running. Raydus and Bingen Palm both finished very fast after losing ground in the early stages Bonny Azure was never going comfortably, and two breaks spoilt her prospects. Blue Mountain’s Great Finish The Ollivier Handicap was run at a fast pace from start to finish, and it resulted in a great race over the last two furlongs. . , , New Derby broke at the start ana Vesuvius at once raced to the front, closelv attended by Grand Mogul. Tempest, Graham Direct, War Buoy, and Evicus. The back-markers were gradually picking up ground, but there was little alteration until the last half mile, at which stage there was a rush for positions. Rounding the top turn Blue Mountain came into the picture and into the straight he followed Vesuvius, Grand Mogul, Tempest, and Graham Direct. Blue Moountam, wide out, finished best of all. and in a great race, the result of which only the judge could tell. Blue Mountain was given the verdict over Tempest, Graham Direct, Grand Mogul, War Buoy, and Harold Logan. Driven with excellent judgment by L. A. Maidens, Blue Mountain had a good run all through the race, and he proved himself the best stayer. Two years ago he finished second to Indianapolis in the Cup, recording 4min 17sec. and his time on this occasion represented a fine performance. The grey pacer is not a bi 0, one, but he has more than average stamina. Tempest showed a return to his best form in running a close second. His stablemate, Grand Mogul, was becoming tired at the finish and was beaten into third place by Graham Direct. The first four horses all received an excellent run, but Graham Direct did not put the dash expected into his final sprint. War Buoy had every chance, but failed in the concluding stages, and the best performer in the unplaced division was Harold Logan, who registered 4min 13 3-ssec from post to post.

Backers Again Astray Bingen Palm, who had put up a splendid race after losing ground at the start of the Ellesmere Handicap, won the Le Lievre Handicap like a good racehorse, and he fairly outclassed his field over the last half mile. Rocks Ahead was the early pacemaker but with half the distance covered Iraq pulled to the front and carried on till half a mile from home, when Bingen Palm took command from Iraq, Rocks Ahead. Guy Junior, Queen Author, and Grace McElwyn. Bingen Palm easily held his own and won with something in hand from Rocks Ahead, Grace McElwyn, Young Frank, and Guy Junior. The winner has put up some great performances at Addington, but has hardlv been consistent. Rocks Ahead and Grace McElwyn each ran a solid race, but the form of the others was not instructive. During the running Queen Author fell and brought down Raydus. A Great Filly By winning the New Zealand Derby in 3min 19 3-ssec, and pacing the last half-mile in Imin 0 l-ssec, Parisienne established her claim to be regarded as the best three-year-old of the year, and one of the best of her age ever raced in New Zealand. It was fine race between as good a field of juvenile pacers as ever contested the blue Parisienne began correctly, and R. B Berry at once sent her to the front at a fair pace, the first quarter mile being covered in 37 l-ssec, at which stage her nearest attendants were Frisco Boy. Dark Hazard, Intrigue, Southern Chief, and Donald Dhu. The irst half-mile was reached in Imin II sec, and a round in Imin 45sec, the t rder being practically the same. The mile post was passed in 2min 19 2-ssec, at which stage Frisco Boy and Southern Chief made their challenges, and Intrigue began to feel the strain. Frisco Boy made a great effort, but, pacing in' resolute style, Parisienne held her own to record a very decisive win. It was an impressive performance. The speed at which the last half mile was run eixplained why Frisco Boy could make little impression on the flying chestnut. Frisco Boy is a high-class colt, little inferior to the winner, and he will make a big improvement during the next yeax or two. Southern Chief had every chance, but he found two just too good for him. He will win good races before he is much older. Donald Dhu is a colt of promise, and he ran a really good race, to finish fourth. Dark Hazard and Intrigue both went well, but Effie Parrish broke during the running and was tailed off for the greater part of the journey. Discord Improves Discord regained many of the friends she had lost by her display on the opening day, when she won the Sockburn Handicap in brilliant style. In the early part she went to a break but she quickly settled down. Lough Guy at once went to the front and showed the way to Rustle, Wahnooka, Discord, and Norma Bingen. With a round to go, Lough Guy was still the leader, but at the half-mile Norma Bingen took command, with Discord in hot pursuit. The pair came into the straight together, and a battle royal took place, in which Wahnooka, trotting fast, joined. Under the whip. Discord trotted in faultless style, and won decisively, and only a break 20 yards from the post robbed Wahnooka of second place. Next to finish were Wrackler and Trampfast. The winner’s showing was a good one, and she is likely tb be favourite for the Dominion Handicap to-day. Norma Bingen’s display was good, and she was beaten only in the last furlong by an exceptionally good trotter. Wahnooka would have been second had he not broken, for he showed as much speed as anything in the race, Wrackler and Trampfast both trotted as well as ever they have done, and both are in excellent order. Stanley T. showed speed, but did not stay, and the others were hopelessly left over the concluding stages. Isabel Derby Wins

In a hard finish, Isabel Derby, one of the outsiders of the field, won the Metropolitan Handicap, but Gallant Knight was the best of good things beaten. Hemmed in on the rails for the greater part of the journey, he put in a great run in the straight, and, with a few more yards to go, he would have won.

Greenmantle, Gallant Knight, and Real Burton raced in line for a furlong. but all three were eased, and Subsidy took the lead from Real Burton, while Gallant Knight and Greenmantle fell back into the ruck. From the half-mile post a great race took place. Plain Pearl ranged alongside Subsidy and close handy were Real Burton, Giro, Rongomai, Gallant Knight, and Isabel Derby. The lastnamed made a fast run round the top turn, and, after beating off Subsidy and Plain Pearl, she had to be hard driven to dispose of Gallant Knight. Following the placed horses were Rea) Burton, Giro, and Golden Cross. Isabel Derby’s win was long overdue, for, at one time regarded as a very promising pacer, she lost all form and proved a big expense to her connexions. The gameness she showed this time suggested that she had regained her best form. Gallant Knight was the unlucky horse of the race, and under a disadvantage he showed himself to be a high-grade pacer. Rongomai was forced to cover some extra ground, and finished very well to defeat her stable-mate, Plain Pearl, for third money. Greenmantle ran into a pocket early and was never given a fair chance, but a quiet tip in Giro failed over the concluding stages. A Brilliant Facer Cloudy Range won the Clarkson Handicap in decisive style, after he bad taken part in a hard finish with Supertax, who faded out badly in the last 50 yards. Blue Mountain, as consistent as ever, put in a great run to gain second money. Worthy Light, Supertax, Roddy, and Cloudy Range all began smartly, and raced in close order for the first half

mile, when Cloudy Range shot to the front and led Worthy Light, Gold Tinge, and Supertax. The last-named tackled Cloudy Range at the distance, and after a great fight faded out. Cloudy Range went on to win by a clear length. It was a grand performance, and stamped Cloudy Range as a brilliant sprinter. Blue Mountain finished with a rare burst of speed, and Roi I’Or, who was in fifth place at the finish, put up a remarkable performance. His time for the mile and a quarter has not often been beaten at Addington. TO-DAY’S PROGRAMME The New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting will be continued to-day.
