EXPORT OF CATTLE
POOR QUALITY ANIMALS SENT | NEED FOR CONTROL STRESSED MEETING OF DAIRY BREEDERS A recommendation that an export board of control should be set up to ensure that all cattle exported from New Zealand were of good quality was moved at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Dairy Breeders’ Federation held in Christchurch last evening. Mr Johnson, the president of the association, who was in the chair, said that in one case an order had come from China for cattle, and because a limited amount of money had been forwarded a very poor class of cattle had been sent. Mr J. P. Kalaugher said he had seea the cattle concerned and they were “a mangy lot.” , _ , . Mr R. J. McCay, of the New Zealand Ayrshire Association, said that the matter was really one for the individual breeding societies. A certain sheep breeding association had set vp an inspection committee for the examination of exported animals. The chairman; The cattle concerned were mostly grade cattle and therefore could not be controlled by any breeders’ society. Mr C. E. Dernier stressed the importance of having experts on the various breeds on any examining body. Mr W. M. Singleton, Director of the Dairy Division, said that if the various societies took the matter up a lead would be given to the Government It was questionable, however, whether the Government could make any separate provision for cattle as apart from sheep. It was then moved by Mr McCay that it be a recommendation to the various breeding societies that inspection committees be set up to examine stud cattle for export and certify their good quality; and that a suggestion be made to the Department of Agriculture that an export board of control be appointed to examine cattle not otherwise under control. The motion was carried unanimously.
